As we know, gmail will be push enabled--the cell phone will know right away when a new mail arrives. I haven't looked at the API, but does anyone think it would be possible to make any email account push enabled within certain restrictions, like having to have access to the mail server? Or even go for the whole thing--make ANY email account push enable no matter what account it is?

But just think if someone figures out how to make any account push enabled. That will also be really nice.

server and protocol side... the only thing you can do is ask your provider to provide push service, or reroute your e-mail (forward) to a different carrier that does provide push... there is no way to go into a mail server and make a carrier push enabled without doing something completely illegal
Buy the rumor, Sell the news.
Make ANY E-mail address "Push" enabled:
Set your e-mail server (MobileMe, Comcast, Charter, Yahoo, Hotmail, whathaveyou) to forward ALL e-mail to your gmail account. Set the option to leave forwarded mail in your current provider's inbox for later.
Set your Gmail account to have messages sent from your Gmail address to appear as your address from above, i.e. whoami@charter.net. That way, no one sees your Gmail address and wonders what is going on.
Now, all your standard address' e-mail gets PUSHED to your G1, and when you reply, it still "comes from" your real address.
This is the solution I used with the Sidekick family (Sidekicks have amazing push support), and Gmail allows the same option of setting a "Reply As" address so no one sees your Gmail address.
