I absolutely hate having to back out of an email and going back to my inbox then clicking on the next newest email. I would love to be able to just press one button on the keyboard, i.e. shortcut to go to the next newest message.

Haha I used to find it kind of annoying, but it doesn't bother me anymore
Yeah, same here! It does get quite annoying having to go back and click on the next message. So I am guessing there is no shortcut to go to the next message?
It would be great if you could drag from lets say Left to Right to be able to read the next message.

Is there a way to delete all messages? Like clear up your inbox?
Better Cut, the paid version of Anycut (free) would seem to have shortcuts to Gmail, check it out.

Your answer is J and K, for "previous" and "next", respectively.
Here Andrew Kameka tells us that the gmail android app supports the same keyboard shortcuts as gmail navigation:

And here is the legend for email navigation keys:

In gmail vernacular this is called moving to an older or newer "conversation".
An amusing and frustrating bug is that these keyboard shortcuts update the subject header and all the email contents underneath, but the label indicators are not refreshed. Going back to the index and into the message again shows the correct labels. It's only the view that is being improperly refreshed when using j and k. It's a little disorienting and mucks the read-label-next workflow I use in a full gmail browser client.
So my phone workflow is 1) read all new messages through 2) go back to Index and file. It's still fewer presses than having to go back and forth all the time. And batch actions make this workflow suck less than it once did.
I <3 my G1, but it's times like this I miss my old danger sidekick, where you'd intuitively press the upper right or left bumper buttons and it would DTRT. Let's hear it for better android handset design in the future.
