Default Google apps gmail setup issue

I've been searching and I've found a lot of posts for imap issues involving folders and trash but I can't seem to find any info on what to do if your phone simply refuses to accept your account info. I followed Google's directions exactly for how to set this up and I've entered everything correctly and tried to troubleshoot this every way I can think of but it always tells me "Username or password incorrect. (web login required [failure])" What's weird is that it has a different username or password incorrect message if I actually enter it incorrectly. Does anyone out there know what I'm doing wrong? I really want to be able to access my school gmail account on my phone.

Are you using the gmail app or the email app?

Email app. Sorry I forgot to specify. I found another thread where a guy was getting the same error message and he said it worked for him once he was on wifi but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case for me...

I hate to suggest this, but I say you should do a complete wipe of your phone and start over.

I thought about that. I guess I just have to decide if the potential for making this work correctly is worth the hassle of wiping my phone clean and starting over. Though I suppose it would be the perfect excuse to finally root my g1.

    Let me get this right...

You're using the Email app instead of the GMail app to access your GMail?

Also, can you log into GMail from the website ok?

Well I have a few different gmail accounts. I have my main one which is my login account for the phone, another one which is a gmail.com domain and one for my school which is @maricopa.edu but hosted by gmail. I've followed all the steps to set this up using the email app provided but it doesn't seem to want to work for whatever reason. I've double and triple checked all my information and it's all correct based on the instructions provided by Google for Android phones. Also, yes the email account works fine using a web browser. To be honest I've just about given up at this point. I can easily live without it, I was more just interested in figuring out where my problem was so I could feel good about myself for fixing it.

The error does say "web login required"... so...

In GMail (the website) -> Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab... is either "Enable POP for all mail" or "Enable IMAP" enabled? And are you using the corresponding protocol in the GMail app on your phone?

I've tried enabling both POP and IMAP together at the same time and then seperately as well. I've tried both different options on the phone. I'm mainly sticking to IMAP but I did try messing with POP just in case. I'm really pretty stumped because it seems like this is supposed to work but it's just not. Also, I'm just using the generic email app, not the gmail app because I already have a different account attached to my gmail app.

Can you access your GMail account using an email client on a computer?

The answer to that would prove if it's the phone or Google's mail system at fault.
