I'd rather not workaround and deal with 10-minute delayed sms. Google needs to have a setting for disabling notifications within the Google Voice app.
Actually,
I would think people want to disable the sms picked up by the native sms app, since this is just an exact copy of the message sent to the gv account.
The difference is, the one @ the gv account is free, but the one you get from your native sms app is not.
This may be important for people who do not have a service plan that includes unlimited sms.
ok so I have a question, if I have gv nd sms is free, does that mean i can just downgrade my g1 plan to the 24.99 one w/ 400 texts ? since ill be getting free sms is that outgoing as well as incoming?

AFAIK, sms from GV is free.
If you disable the "Receive SMS on this phone" option on GV for your G1, then the native sms app never even comes up when you get a gv sms.
GV sms goes through the data (3g/edge/wifi), so it doesn't count against your plan.
Has anyone else noticed that notifications are arriving late? Sometimes I don't get a text unless I open the Google Voice app. This started when I removed my unlimited text plan.

Happens when you disable the double notification.
Would be nice if there was a way to do this from the phone though. If you're in an area with no internet coverage, texting still works right? So you could use the 406 numbers, and you'd be golden. Except if you had previously disabled texts from going to that phone, then you're screwed heh
You cold use your phone number now
