Ok, i know its a silly question but, will we ONLY be able to download apps via the android market, or can we download and install apps from anywhere?
Like when i had my razr, i could just download the .jad file from any website through the phone or even from off the computer. Select the .jad file on the phone and it would install. Or when DL from the phone, it would install automatically. Or like how the iphone originaly needed installer.app then cydia in order to install via the phone- or you had to use SSH and do some wierd manual intall. Or or even how aome of the BB aps came from other sorces such as handdango and such..
just curious. I know there wouldnt be any reason for an app not to be in the market yet- but maybe people are self publishing or something. Plus, knowing that would also let me know if there wasa way to save presently unused apps to the computer for future use.- like when something is on sale or before they start charging.
Yes you can install by downloading a .apk file off the web through the browser (not sure how it will work through the sdcard b/c there is no file browser yet, but I guess you can put it in the downloads folder so you can use the browser to install). It will warn you first and you have to change some settings to allow it to but you can install an app through the browser.
Not sure if there will be an option to save apps that you downloaded off the market.
stopcrazypp is correct. One of the advantages of downloading through the market is that they will be doing some validation to make sure that the application is not a virus. Applications that are downloaded through other channels will not have that option available.

Has anyone confirmed the location that apps are installed to? Internal Memory or Memory Card? I couldn't fine an answer.
Ok, so it's possible, just not till devs get on the file browsing thing- so basicaly it will be a manual install? and if there was said file browser, i could just make copies of the app package file?
I was just curious really. Yes, i know the concerns about virus and everything- but i'm thinking people may have beta tests not on the market and such, or if i want o save my apps or whatever.. just nice to know is all.
Actually you don't have to wait for the file browser. You CAN install them straight out on the normal internet browser on the phone. It will download the file and then you can click it and it installs like any normal app.
But if you put the install files on the sdcard you probably have to put them in the "downloads" folder in order to see them in the internet browser's downloads section to install them, since there's no file browser yet. I hope I made it clear this time.
But for apps downloaded from the market, I'm not sure you will be able to see the install file (the .apk file), that is why I said I'm not sure if you can save apps from the market.
Here's the section from the User guide:
Download Web files and applications
Before you download any files or applications using the Browser, note the following:
• Before you can download Web applications, you must explicitly “allow” downloading from the Home > Settings screen:
1
Press HOME, then press MENU and select Settings.
2
Select Applications, then on the Application settings screen, select the Unknown sources check box.
• All items downloaded form the Web are stored on your SD card, so be sure you have a card installed in your phone before you download from the Browser. (Read more in “SD card slot” on page 11.)
• The Browser will only allow you to download items that are supported by an application installed on the phone.

Just wanted to add, can you look out for install files also? They end in ".apk". I'm wondering if the install files for the apps you download in the market will be on the sdcard, since the market has a "my downloads" section. This should answer the question about whether you can backup apps from the market.
