I'm an EX iphone user, I am now a G1 user...any advice?

I've decided to not use my Iphone anymore, I wanted a phone that's touch screen with buttons applicable...and I thought of the palm pre or the G1 (most famous ones)...A friend told me the G1 is the iphone's "Cousin"...lol...Anyways, with Me Being a new user do anyone have some HELPFUL tips? about apps, unlocking capabilities, anything you think will help...& lemme say this...I DO NOT LIKE the "Market" the apps are horrible (help with that would be greatly appreciated)...I'm VERY new to this phone...i REALLY need HELP! Please & thanks to everyone!

Well. First off, The G1 is the first of android phones. It's a year old at this point. It's RAM and ROM deficient. The mytouch has a little more ram and double the ROM. The Motorola droid I believe is the same specs as the my touch. If you have the oppurtunity to return the G1 both of those would probably be a better pick. If you are willing to go with Sprint the HTC HERO is FAR supierior to anything T-mobile offers. If you want to go with Verizon the Verizon Droid is coming out Nov. 8. It promises to be the best android phone of all.
The G1 is fine if you don't overload it with apps and widgets. When you overload it it will lag as it is RAM starved.

My tips are you take a serous look at the app market. There are many cool apps. For games I'd recommend:
Atomic Blaster, baseball superstars, buka, radiant. There are other good games, but not much of a gamer.
For apps I'd recommend
audio manager, accuweather (the best of the weather apps IMO), backgrounds, camera magic, documents to go lite, gmote, t-mobile app pack, t-mobile my account, "music online lite" <-- a must get. As well as sherpa, picsay, ringdroid, shazam, tunewiki, visual voicemail (in the app pack) and "movies" from the app pack.

Also check out bonsai blast, listen, pandora, imeem, shopsavvy

I have had a G1 almost since they came out. If you're coming from an iPhone, the apps market is going to be less "wow" and, as others have pointed out, RAM & ROM are issues. But... it depends on your reason for having the phone in the first place. If you are basically looking for a decent smartphone, the G1 -- with the right apps -- finally qualifies. And, though people are apparently ready to switch from GSM to CDMA (like from Tmo to Sprint) just to chase the lastest gear, well, I need GSM because I go to Europe or Asia and CDMA is a black hole there. However, if you're looking for a toyphone -- like the iPhone -- then the more ROM/RAM the better.

Couple of app tips: The email on board the G1 blows. K9 works for some people, but the new email app from Seven (do a search) is the best, even in its Beta form. Unlike the stock app, it allows you to received and save ANY attachment, even if you do not have an app that can read it on the phone.

If you want to be able to transfer files/data via bluetooth (like most prehistoric phones have been doing for ages) try the program Bluetooth file Transfer from Medieval Software. It's free, you don't have to root. You can send, but for others to send to you, they will need the program on their phone or you will need to root yours.

However... if you're just chasing cool over function... good luck. My advice: keep your G1 until the dust has settled on the Android (and other) phones.

The g1 is a use and abuse type thing. Blow it up! I don't like the Iphone, but I like it's app store and you can see things my way knowing that.
There's a few things here in there but personally you should of waited to buy a different Android device, the g1 is a downgrade.

Great advice, so far!

Here are some additional thoughts:

1) I bought a myTouch 3G because I didn't like the *extremely* limited program space (ROM) in the G1. Of course, you can root if you want to get around this.
2) I've never had an iPhone, but I bought an iTouch 3G prior to purchasing the MT3G. Frankly, I hated it after using my wife's G1. I simply like the Android OS much more than iPhone OS. Multitouch is for the birds: you can do the same things on Android using only one hand.
3) Another thing I *love* about Android is *never* having to connect to a computer (except for tethering). Some of my iPhone friends tell me they have to connect to iTunes on their laptops to install some things.
4) Android Market is far behind App Store, as everyone knows. Still, when I want tips on what apps to get, I ask the many people I know who have iPhones. More and more, I'm able to get the *exact* app on Android. Still there are many that are not here, yet, but I think most excellent aps will make it eventually. For the ones that haven't made it, I search for keywords and can often find a similar, though often inferior, application.

I'm interested to hear from you which of your favorite iPhone apps are not on Android, yet. That way I can know what to look forward to in the future.
