Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

If it ever comes out, after what Bratag just proved, that it's something that's practically built into the system anyway. You might as well have put that $15 into SnapPhoto, seeing that SP actually works and delivers something over what the standard Camera app does (poorly, if I might add).

Exclamation Re: MemoryUp Personal Free Edition (Mobile RAM Booster) - New!

I laughed when I first saw this advertised only recently, with a 'bargain' price reduction from 14.99 to 9.99... then stopped laughing when I realised people were downloading it!

Okay, it only takes a little thinking to see that this is a scam.

Before anything else, the price is ridiculous. Even if the utility does what it says on the tin, it isn't such a marvel of coding that it should warrant that sort of money. I would guess that they set the price that high in order to give the impression of professional and functional software. To clarify, even a perfectly functioning tool of this type should be cheap as chips (if not free, as I would guess the average coder would knock something like this up in less than a day).

Now, if we forget that the underlying code of the OS is perfectly capable of handling memory requirements, and assume that the Android OS developers had no clue of what they were doing, I still wouldn't assume that the creators of this software knew more about efficient memory management on a specific device/OS even before that device/OS hit the public.

One cannot overlook the fact that the ads and blurbs for this software are obviously generic and have been poorly edited to reflect the specific target - as pointed out earlier by someone else, the G1 (or any Android device) is not a J2E phone! Also, how can the memory booster manage to provide more memory for both the system AND your apps? Ignoring the fact that this tool will have a memory footprint of its own, where does it get the memory from? Normally, freeing memory for one will compromise the other.

Generally, memory boosters don't work. They've been around since before Windows 98, and even then their worth was questionable - all they did was dump a ton of data to the paging file. Any effect is temporary, and more than offset by the delays in reloading all the data you've just dumped.

Memory defragmentation is nonsense. No more to be said on that score.

Perhaps you could defragment your SD card, but as solid-state storage functions differently to magnetic media, this serves no purpose other than to shorten the life of your card due to a substantial increase in data writes.

I haven't bought this product, and I don't need to. I don't even need to read previous purchaser's comments because I wouldn't trust any positive reviews to be truthful or intelligent.

This application no longer has any reason NOT to be submitted to the Market, other than the fact that the comments there are more likely to be honest, and refunds are only a click away.

Last, but certainly not least, the few functions that might be worth having (memory/storage monitor) are available in a number of free or cheap apps already on the Market.

This software is yet another example of the unscrupulous feeding off the gullible. At best, this software is unnecessary, costly, and will cause problems either immediately, or through continued use. At worst, it is a cynical and malicious attempt to defraud the credulous, and may even be intentionally harmful or invasive of your privacy (I am willing to bet my meagre salary that this mines personal information).

Services and software like this trouble me greatly, and I am always quick to speak out against them. I think it almost as bad as outright robbery - only it must pay better because these thieves spend a lot of time and effort on making these things look like something other than a dirty little con.

Don't buy it. Don't use it. Don't trust it. Don't be a mug.
