    Default MS Exchange e-mail!

I use MS exchange e-mail server at work. And the e-mail application on the G1 does not allow me to set up my work e-mail and retrieve messages. T-Mobile told be the only way I could read messages was to have my g-mail account pull the messages from the MS exchange server and then read them together with my g-mail e-mail. This works, but I can not send messages from the MS exchange address or sever. So it isn't a good solution. The firm that wrote the application to sync MS exchange contacts is quoted as saying that an e-mail sync isn't needed because MS exchange can be read using IMAP. well that may be, but it doesn't work using the set up e-mail program available on the G1. Or am I missing something?

I am able to access my jobs exchange sever via IMAP?? You should ask the admins at your job is it possible. For me it was actually easy, it was basically "imap.<WorkDomain>.com"

Many companies refuse to enable outside access to IMAP on the exchange server. Why? Because Windows admins have to be paranoid about security exploits.

You can use Outlook Web Access. It's crap, but it works.
You can set up a forwarding rule. It's crap, but it works.

Finally got my imap to pull mail down but it's still acting weird. It also pulls down all of my Outlook folders and all of our Public Global Folders which is very annoying. I don't even see our Global Folders from my Outlook when I'm on exchange at my desk. Can't see to find an option to hide the folders either. Also I can't send messages. Just find this weird. I've used IMAP on lots Nokia devices before they had Mail for Exchange and on my iPhone and they all worked fine.

The sad thing is, I enjoy driving myself crazy trying to figure stuff like this out. Man, I'm a nerd..

I think it's working for me now. I asked our IT person to install Exchange IMAP and turn on "Automatic Polling". He did this and the set up through the G1 e-mail icon worked. I also got the calendar, contacts and all the public folders many of which I didn't know existed. That is annoying. Don't know how much space it takes up on the G1, but it isn't needed!

I am able to send messages though using the exchange e-mail. They seem to take a bit of time. But they have eventually gone through. And you also have to set how frequently it checks for messages - between five minutes and 60.

Ok, so we both got all of the Public folders. Yes it's annoying. You are using your IMAP server to pull mail down, but what are you using to send mail? Are you using myemail.t-mobile.com or something specific to your server? I can't get mine to send.

I am also using the MS exchange program to send mail. There is an option to compose a message on the menu and that sends a new message using the MS exchange e-mail. The message is sent using that e-mail address and it appears in the sent files folder on my office server.

Right, when you set it up, you select to use this email address as the primary sent from address so when you compose mail it will be sent from that address. My question is, what are you using for your outgoing mail server? The incoming for IMAP would be something like imap."your company".com but what outgoing server are you using? Are you saying that you entered the same server as you did for incoming mail?
