Ok so for those that have the SDK up and running there is a version of Opera Mini you can download and run, it is an .apk file.
This may be a noob question and if so apologies, i've been looking all over with really no luck.
Does anyone know how to force install the app straight into the phone as an .apk file?
The program and history behind the app can be found here.

Any thought or ideas would be appreciated. im sick of the sluggish G1 browser.
it wont install on the G1 as far as I can tell..
"I'm shocked at the diversity of the people psyched for the G1. All different people united...under Android"
I saw this running for the first time on a G1 today at one of the stores launches. Non-functioning back button and all. the person said his "friend" got the app up and running for them. I still have no clue as how to do it.
Anyone had quality time with the SDK that knows how to shoe horn this thing on there?
Even though I had the SDK installed and followed all the instructions on how to load it into the emulator, the installation failed with a malformed package error. I'm as stuck as you are.
I installed the app installer from the market and download the .apk file to my sd card. The app installer sees the actual .apk file but doesn't install it, wtf?! Am I missing something?
Why use Opera Mini over Google Chrome lite?
i've heard that Opera might have flash support for the G1? I don't know...
but one benefit is that it's a lot lighter, and uses technology to download/display web sites more efficiently.
to install it using the SDK Follow this URL. http://gadgetwidgets.com/2008/11/08/...tall-apk-file/
The problem I found, is that with every APK file I find for Opera that's out there... I get an error regarding the apk having a "Malformed Manifest"...which to my understanding has something to do with the manifest designating the app as "beta" which apparently was the flag that they used to remove all the beta apps on the market just before the G1 released to the public.
If anyone can find an APK out there with a properly formed manifest, we'll be in business.
after further research the problem is that the APK was developed using an older SDK. so Opera needs to re-release a version compiled under the latest SDK.
Here's the official word from Opera.
"Please note that this version of Opera Mini for Android was developed using the previous version of the Android SDK, so won't work in the latest version, or the available Android phones. We are working on updating it, and will have it released as soon as possible."

@deathwish238
why use over the inbuilt one?
1) bookmarks.... you can't change the order - so your favourite sites which you probably bookmarked first are now at the bottom of a huge list and aren't accessible (using anycut can custom bookmarks from the homepage but it riles me that these always open in a new tab) and you can't start typing the name to skip quickly to a matching bookmark
2) closing tabs - only half of tabs actually have a "close" option in the menu (menu-W while browsing) the others have to be closed through pressing the x on the windows view... i still can't work out what determines if you can close a tab or not, i think it is whether they are a daughter page of an existing window or not
3) zooming... i don't like it, primarily as you have to move the window first before the zoom keys appear... while the auto fit function works quite well, the browser still showing the bbc homepage at a zoomed out view so you have to zoom in each time (not so on the FT.com for example)
4) "back" - opera mini (on other phones anyway) caches previous pages so you can speedily back-up through your navigation, not labouriously reload the last page your were looking at
just ranting, none deal-breakers, most fixable with an update, but i reckon i'd like to see what opera can do with the g1, i reckon it will beat the inbuilt attempt hands-down for usability until it is updated...
