    Default PS3 Remote App

I have a PS3 but don't have the Blu-ray remote and none of the Harmony remotes work with the PS3 because they don't support Bluetooth. I think it would be awesome if the G1 could connect with the PS3 via Bluetooth and control the PS3 for DVD and BD playback. Plus I really don't want to pay the 25 for the Sony BD remote for the PS3 because I don't think it works that well and is too clunky, and the one we have at work hardly ever connects to the PS3 correctly.

I've been thinking about that myself.... so I'm sure it will be implemented by someone down the road. The question is how much of the bluetooth can be integrated with the API. If the full functionality is there, then I think you can take this a step further:

Besides just a Blu-Ray remote for the PS3, the bluetooth should enable the keyboard as well. I know I would find this very useful. In addition, for browsing and such, the screen could be programmed to act as a touch screen mouse pad, so you will have both keyboard and mouse capability. If the bluetooth can be fully programmed, the possibilities become really nice.

It should be possible. Has Sony released the API anywhere? They probably haven't. Does Bluetooth have the capability to "listen" to bluetooth communication between two other devices? If so you could listen to the communication going on between the control and the system, and implement that into the application.

    Well,

Going slightly off topic for a moment - Nikon is rumored to be working on their future line of DSLR cameras to support blue tooth and wifi so you could use your cell as a remote.

Currently all their stuff supports only infrared, so if you had a cell with infrared you could use it as a short range remote, their talking about putting wifi and blue tooth in their next gen cameras to support the other two so a wider range of devices could act as remotes (cell phones) as well as transfer data to other cameras or data storage devices.

I would be stoked if my G1 would end up becoming a remote for my D40!

Back on topic - HTC implemented both capabilities for the G1 so I honestly don't doubt at all that it won't be able to support services such as your w/ your PS3. Whether you can do it initially or through an application.

I've heard people actually using their cell phones as remotes for their entertainment centers after a little custom work. No reason why the G1 should be able to handle that.

The PS3's movie playback controls can be controlled using a USB or Bluetooth Keyboard, i.e. different functions are just different keypresses on a standard keyboard. With that said, Bluetooth devices have different profiles (Dial Up Networking profile (DUN), Object Push Profile (OPP), Serial Port Profile (SPP), etc.) Wireless mice, keyboard, joysticks use the Human Interface Device (HID) profile. So if the G1 supports that profile natively, it wouldn't be hard at all to design an App to control the PS3. This is all assuming that the PS3 supports this profile and doesn't require some commands through serial port profile or something.

If the right bluetooth profiles are available to both devices I would imagine an app could be made that would use the accelerometer and tilt sensors on the G1 to play games using motion w/ the G1. I guess they could make a wrist strap accessory as well so no G1s end up smashing through TV screens.

ngerecitano: You can use a Logitech remote on your PS3. My work around was I bought the Nyko RF remote. Plugged the dongle into the PS3, learned each program for play/pause, stop, etc. and chucked the remote. Then on the screen (if you have the 880 or up) I put square, triangle, X and circle, then put the L's and R's on the second screen (just incase). It works like a champ.

The only thing it won't do is turn on the PS3 since thats only done with the PS button via BT. But thats ok since it turns on when you put in a new movie anyway. If not, I just send the kid remote and he powers it on 9 out of 10 times.

But yeah, using the phone as a keyboard and the screen as the mouse would be friggin sweet. I don't ever use my browser because its too much of a hassle with the controller. Thinking about buying the snap on keyboard, but don't really want to shell out $40 plus for it.

    Hope this helps!

Compared to paying for the remote this def would be an app I would pay for. But can you imagine, I know you will use the PS3 remote to do it, but imagine your phone died and you wanted to pause the movie.

Yes Random, but something small like that would give me a "WTF" moment lol.
