I'm about to try it out, too. I probably shouldn't have started this at 2:45am, but I'm just that stupid.

I'll post again after I'm all done.

    p.s.
I'm watching season 2 episodes 1&2 of Flight of the Conchords while I wait on MyBackup to do it's work. Anyone else in love with these guys?

Thanks to the OP for all your help... i just rooted and its great.....

my only question is how important is the step "*Optional but highly recommended*

To install the modified bootloader rename Hard_SPL_update.zip to update.zip and switch the phone off and then hold down the home key while you switch it on again. Keep the home key held down until you see the new recovery menu, hit Alt-S to apply the new bootloader. Congrats you now have the modified bootloader with the skating androids."
    whats this for?
Oh and how does one take screenshots and have auto rotate at the home screen?

OK, I just downgraded to RC29 and rebooted, but the screen where you have to log into your google account came up and I logged into google to make sure I was on RC29. Now what do I do to get to where I type in the rest. I'm lost.

Wow. Thank you, OP, for the summarization and bundling of files. I rooted in under 10 minutes with no problems whatsoever.

The first thing I did was install "Screenshot" from the market and I'm already in love with my rooted G1.

I'm not sure how important it is, and I'm not sure what it does, but I did it with no problems at all.

Also, to take screenshots, install "screenshot" from the market, and I don't think you can auto-rotate at the homescreen yet - only in the browser. There is a new setting for it. And make sure you try the multitouch functionality in the browser too, it's flippin sweet. (pinch to zoom)

    pick up again here:

    Reboot the phone
When it has finished booting hit enter twice and type the following at the home screen. It will start searching your contacts, but don't worry about that. Also, you won't see any visible sign that the first command worked. Just go ahead and type the second command straight afterwards:

    cd sdcard<press enter>
    sh install<press enter>

After a moment your phone should reboot itself.

    <<<Upgrading to Modified RC30>>>

switch off the phone and then hold down the home key while you switch it on again. Keep the home key held down until you see the recovery screen (with the "!" triangle and the picture of the phone). Then press Alt+L on the keyboard and if you see "Using test keys" on the second line of text then the modified recovery image is installed and you can now install a modified firmware by hitting Alt-S.

    <<<Install Modified Bootloader>>>

To install the modified bootloader rename Hard_SPL_update.zip to update.zip and switch the phone off and then hold down the home key while you switch it on again. Keep the home key held down until you see the until the new recovery menu, hit Alt-S to apply the new bootloader.

OK, I finally got it. The OP's instructions are good, but they are not clear enough. He left out a lot. A suggestion would be to write out a step-by-step tutorial stating each process with either visuals or an explanation of what you will see or not see. Otherwise they are great. Now I'll try the bootloader.

Mixpix405 I'm doing something wrong. I renamed the file to just update.zip and rebooted while holding down the homekey, I saw a bunch of white scrolling type, then got to the recovery screen. I then hit Alt-S and it said:

    Installing from sdcard...
    Finding update package...
    Opening update package...
    Veryfying update package...
    Installing update...
    Extracting hboot image...
    Installation complete...

    Press Home+back to reboot
    Installing hboot image...

So I did and it went right back to the recovery screen. Don't know what I missed.

This part needs to be added to the original post. I was going crazy after applying bootloader, I thought I would see it at start up.

Thanks for the heads up, I added it to the first post.
