nobody knows for sure, but most of us are assuming it will be able to because the onboard 256mb of ram wouldn't be much room with all the applications being developed for android... heres a small little tutorial:
ram = random access memory
rom = read only memory
nv = non-volatile
now i'm guessing the RAM that is used in the G1 is nvram, which means that even if your battery is out of the device or it completely discharges, are your information is safe... ROM is not used for storage, that is used for flashing of the OS and the OS itself... now since nvram is typically shared on phones, this means that the whole 256mb of RAM is not available to you, its more than likely being used as page cache to run programs on the phone itself, so you'll more than likely only have access to 160-192mb of it depending on how many programs you keep running...
now since RAM is on the mainboard, depending on the quality of it and bitrate transfer speed its typically faster to run programs off of the device storage than memory card storage, because;
1. its just another medium and chance for data degradation due to a copper connection and not a wired connection via the contacts of the memory card
2. depends on the rating of the card that you have (2, 4, 6), etc
hope this clears up some questions
