Not sure how many of you here are familiar with the spoofcard service (www.spoofcard.com), but essentially it's a service that lets you call any cell/landline number and spoof any caller ID numer of your choice to appear on that persons caller ID. It also lets you disguise your voice and records the call for playback later. I've used it A LOT in the past (for totally legal purposes) and it's great.
They developed an App for the iphone/ipod touch a while back that allows you to just input the number you're calling and the number you're spoofing to the other person instead of calling the toll number manually. It works really well and I have been hoping for some news of an Android version. I emailed spoofcard support to inquire about it today.
The response: "We are working on it now!
We will be looking for Beta testers soon. Keep checking SpoofApp.com"
Sounds great to me. I wonder how many other apps are being developed/ported that we are unaware of?
Well technically the technology here is legal, but some (many?) uses of it are not.
Personally, I have used it on a lot of work conference calls. I'm supposed to dial in from my store, but I spent a lot of time at home on my cell. No one ever knew the difference.
And lets be honest, I've done a few harmless pranks over the years. Calling someone form their own cell phone saying it's them from the future? Priceless.
I would hope that if it is being used for illegal purposes and the need arises for the police or FBI to trace that spoofcard doesn't truly mask someones identity.
If it does mask someones identity from them than spoofcard is just, unintentionally, aiding criminals. Yes where there is a will there is a way but do they have to provide it?
On a lighter note, I like the idea. I would be able to play pranks on my friends and family. Give the illusion of being somewhere I am not for work, etc.
Man if I didn't have such an obvious speech pattern and voice I'd definitely pull that prank.
"I'm shocked at the diversity of the people psyched for the G1. All different people united...under Android"
sounds sweet.
