    Default swapper

Anyone else download the swaapper app? I guesss it turns the sd card into virtual memory similar to windows vista. I tired it but haven't used it long enough to notice a difference. Anyone else try it?

I doubt the usefulness of this application. In the desktop enviroment you might notice a difference with Vista's "Ready Boost" because esentially your recalling data from a flash memory(non-mecahnical) vs recalling data from your HD (mechanical) In this case with our phones we dont have mecahnical memory but rather internal flash memory. In fact i think depending on how the speed class of the memory card it may actually slow you down if you have a slower/cheaper type of memory.

Windows Vista bench marks your flash memory to see if even worth useing ready boost. I doubt swapper can do that.

Correct me if am wrong people...
cant put this damn phone down...

There was a thread here about a month or so ago talking about whether swapping would help make the phone a bit more responsive. I have tried it for a bit manually and have some good feedback.

The good news is that it speeds up the phone quite a bit, especially when running multiple applications simultaneously. I have over 100 apps installed on my phone (SD Card) and before I did the swap, it would take about 10-15 seconds for my homescreen to load (after exiting an application or pressing the home button). Once the swap was done, I would exit out of an application and the homescreen would show up right away.

This is all nice and good but there are some things that happen after a while. Probably a few hours later, the phone will start to get unresponsive and it will take up to 30 seconds or more to do an action (e.g. change steel from portrait to landscape mode). At this point you can either let it work itself out (sometimes it fixes itself) or just go ahead and restart the phone and get rid of the swap.

Something else that you should know is that the speed improvement will depend on what memory card you are using. You should not even try it if you don't have at least a class 4 memory card or it will really slow down the phone after about 5 minutes. In addition, the swappiness setting should be changed to something more reasonable (around 15 or 20) and the extended memory should be set at something around 32MB. I have found that those are the ideal settings for my phone. I haven’t downloaded the application so I don’t know if those settings are configurable.

Bottom line is, if you want to try it, then go right ahead and check it out. There is no harm done to the system as far as I know and the settings should be easily reversible by either restarting the phone or by completely removing the application.

For those of you that are interested is learning how it works, you should check out this discussion at xda forums for more information.

In all seriousness, it tells the system how often to swap from 0 to 100 (the higher the more often it will swap). You should really read the xda thread if you want to learn more about how swapping work.

From what I understand, it's useful but it's still buggy right now and isn't recommended, correct?

I would actually recommend trying it out to see how it works out with your phone. If you don't like it then go ahead and uninstall it and no harm should be done.

I actually notice quite a big improvment after using all day. Playing radio and surfing at the same time. and back and fourth between apps stays smooth. I really like it.

BTW I have about 130 apps.
