    Default G1 Desktop Open-Use Cradle

I found that when at my desk either at work or at home it was difficult to glance at the G1 when listening to ImeeM or when awaiting SMS messages which now light my screen up (thanks to SMS Screen Alert Prefs....). So I sought out to come up with a solution that even tilt-screen Windows mobile phones can't do on their own.

Here's what I did to come up with it and it took me only about 20 minutes.

    Materials Required:
1 - Acrylic/polycarbonate desktop business card holder (I used a clear $0.99 one found at Target UPC-081081365 which goes with any color G1)

    Optional Niceness:
1 - 4" X 4" swath of Ultrasuede synthetic fabric (may be substituted with thin Microfiber cloth or other suitable material to prevent sliding and scratching)

    Modifying:
First you'll probably want to notch about 3/8" off of the bottom upturning lip to allow for the G1's shoulder to fit within the
To relive the muffling of the speaker, I drilled a hole on the back of the card holder to allow for full speaker broadcasting when not plugged into the included headphones. I even put a little tab of self-adhesive neoprene to act as a bumper between the phone's menu shoulder and the stand's upturning lip.

I'm now thinking I should mod this thing further to sit nice and tidy in my car.... I'll share that if I pursue going down that road.

Feel free to share your thoughts!

lol, looks real pointless, do you really want to just leave it sit like that? Whats the point of it to look cool or watch a video lol in low quality.

cool, but did you really have to cut out the hole for the camera? You taking pictures while it's in your "cradle"?

Read the post, the hole is for the speaker.

Interesting idea, I had a little stand I used for my Blackjack 2 for similar reasons, I may look into something like this.

I do think this is a good idea, but not worth building myself. After seeing this, I looked over at my desk and tried setting my G1 into a business card holder. Works perfect as far as I'm concerned, and they're cheap too. The kind I have is from Walmart and it's a rubbermaid brand and is a mesh style like the picture below. The mesh lets the speaker sound play through and has a rubbery coating that doesn't scractch.

I was used to my HTC Uni staying open (clamshell) and I like this idea. Someone should market it along with an app that turns your G1 into a Radio/Alarmclock. What do you mean by SMS Screen Alert Prefs?

This is pointless. If you want a cradle i think they sell one that lets the phone sit vertical and charge it at the same time. Since its sitting vertical no reason why you can’t play music while its charging.
cant put this damn phone down...

doesn't seem pointless to me... once the bluetooth API is opened up and addition peripherals (mice, keyboard, etc) are added to the list for android, the thing is practically an on the go computer...

not only does this open up the possibilities for some people to let go of their notebook altogether, but it also opens up possibilities with mobile gaming... having an actual full sized keyboard on mobile games will increase their functionality capability tenfold, and you're gonna have to have a stand for your phone!

granted a "phone stand" is by no means a new idea, its still very useful to me

The only cradle I've seen cost over $50... well over, if I remember correctly.

I know this isn't "the same thing" by any means, but it's a great idea if someone can't, or doesn't want to spend the dough on the real deal.
