Cool Android Hack: Garage Door Opener

Yet another cool Android hack has surfaced this weekend. Thanks to a tipster of ours, we were directed to brad’d life, where Brad talks about how he was able to get Android to work as his garage door opener.
Using an Android Activity with an Android Service that he wrote his garage door opener does a WiFi scan every few moments to check for his house. It’s brilliant, it’s simple, and it’s just the beginning of some really neat Android things to come!

I just threw on some shoes and hopped on my motorcycle to do a test lap around the neighborhood. When I got to the corner, I pulled up the activity and press “Start” (aka “Going home now”). A lady on the corner saw me playing with my phone on my motorcycle and said, “The reception’s not so good up here.” I thanked her, not wanting to explain what I was actually doing.

The best part of this whole thing is that Brad has released the source code today! Have Android running your whole house by the end of next year!

This is some crazy stuff, it would be nice to autostart my car. People who have the G1 telling me that the G1 doesnt have alot of cool things and started bailing, but little did they know of the possibilities. THanks for sharing this, def a bookmark.

I have a remote start. It'd be nice to have a program to automagically open the garage and start the car on a schedule.

before the phone was even released i read somewhere about an app to start the car and a a device u have to have installed in your car. wish i could start it. turn on the seat warmers, adjust the heat, stereo, and maybe drive it like in the james bond movie. haha. but im sure we will see it in the future... very excited to see how the garage door opener works.

wow this is an application that I would actually use an very very usefull. Is there a step by step tutorial on how to set this all up? I checked out the his site he posted, and the forum replies but nothing on how to do all this. If anyone can help this would be great and then we would send people here that are asking the same question

this is why open source is great -- a software company wouldn't think of this...and if they did, it wouldn't carry enough customers with it for the company to "waste" developers time making it.
