The reason that they created the Android market place is to protect us from viruses and such. I would not download from any other place.

I am positive they are working on some sort of antivirus app that would check everything if is a virus or not. Once we have that - non-android apps can be checked easily.
Having in mind that a lots of ppl will want to install apps onto their memory card (which is going straight to developer website and starting download and install from there) than they better hurry up with something![]()

Thats a great mentality until the Android Market decides not to include an app you want for whatever reason (such as the few file manager apps that are already out). I'd say rather than going with the mentality of Android Market or nothing at all, just be cautious where you download files from...use reputable sources...read reviews...etc...
why would you ever need to download it from somehere else?

But, to the best of my knowledge, they haven't yet. I personally would rather grab it from a reputable source and have it now than wait for the possibility of having it via Android Market down the road.
Truthfully, I think all of the media about handset hacking, spyware, virii, etc is scaring people waaay too much. Whats to say Android Market is going to be safe? I'm yet to see any detailed information that Google is going to check any of the apps being put up. Yes there is a killswitch built in that will help remove installed applications, but remember that if its already on your phone, the damage could be done.
If you're really paranoid about something bad getting on your phone this really isn't the phone for you. This phone is empowered by its applications, and every time you install one you are technically risking exposure to something you may not want. That being said, if you use common sense you minimize the possibility of this happening. Quoting myself from a previous post:
"That being said, I don't want you to think "Hey this is great news! I have nothing to worry about! I'm going to go download random application X!". This is not what I'm saying. As with any computer, and lets face it, the G1 is a beast and more of a computer than my first computer, you need to be aware of where things are coming from. You need to make sure that you get your applications from trusted sources. Get your apps from the Android Market whenever possible, and be cautious when downloading apps from random webpages. Whenever possible, read reviews and educate yourself on what you're actually downloading. In most situations, the weakest point in a security model is the end user. The easiest way to get something on a computer that shouldn't be there is by tricking the end user into putting it on there for them. This is done by opening an email attachment or running an application that looks like something other than it is. If you keep an eye on what you're downloading and installing, educate yourself, and keep away from applications that aren't coming from trustworthy sources, I honestly feel that you as the end user will be fine."
