No, no, no... that isn't it at all.
All the verizon internal documents leaked show the Sholes.
Both companies need this badly.
I think that there was problems with Android 2.0 (Eclair) that the sholes needs to run. Maybe google told them to hold it since sholes was not ready for the scrutiny of the event. Perhaps it needed a few more weeks of fine-tuning too.

I like your comment that the CLIQ presentation was done at the last minute since Sholes was not ready. That makes sense.
However, Sholes is coming, I believe the unveiling is October 6th.
