Hmm... that might change things... but I thought the g1 has 192mb of ram so how does the g1 run faster if it only has 128mb?

    The G1 doesn't have 192mb of ram the G2 does I mean (MyTouch 3G)

*Edit* ram is the same on G1 and G2, the rom is where there is a difference, 256 G1/ 512 G2 (MyTouch)

I've only had the HTC Magic so I don't know how Android behaves with less memory - but HTC Magic and Cupcake truly flies.

Common sense would suggest particular the multitasking experience to deteriorate rapidly with less RAM, as the Android OS has to push and pop more back and forth between flash storage and RAM - might also cost more battery power. Over the long term, one can also imagine large application (games?) not being able to run at all.

The G1 might actually have 192MB physical RAM, but only about half is accessible to Android and your applications. Meanwhile, the G2 actually has 288MB, but only 192MB is accessible. The service manual suggests the baseband/chipset (GSM radio, framebuffer etc.) to host 64MB DDR and then there must obviously be around 32MB reserved for other hardware (192+64+32=288).

It's a little hard to figure out, I think marketing tricks are employed here. So I'm looking forward to somebody actually dissecting the devices. It's also not entirely true that it has 512MB ROM (flash RAM), by my investigation I arrive at 562MB (while only 295MB are accessable, namely the /data partition).

I guess the plan for lager updates on the magic is why they left that much space for the system. Already for builds like the hero the G1 the way it comes doesnt have enough room.

    Very informative, thanx.

I'm aware that the Sammy will only have 128, thats almost as baffling as the G1 only having around 70 megs of storage for apps, but that screen is beautiful. I swear, every device thats released always leaves you wanting something, nothing is ever the total package. Also, preliminary specs of the Magic have been conflicting. I think we'll have to wait till HTC make a page for the "myTouch 3G"
