Scrannel,
It is not a big deal. The way it is supposed to work is that you check Disable Roaming. This means that your G1 automatically disables the data connection whenever you are not in your home network. But there is a bug in that sometimes your G1 is roaming but it thinks it is home (it confuses foreign T-Mo networks for its home net). So, the Disable Roaming option does not have an effect.
Disabling the data connection using the steps described above is just a way of manually disabling the data connection instead of having your G1 do it automatically.
This is an easy bug to fix. Until then, just disable your data connection manually (and remember to re-disable it after you use your wifi). If your data connection is diabled, you will see the bars indicating signal strength on the top of your screen, but the network icon will be absent. Your voice and txt messages will work fine, but you won't be able to get email, surf the web etc. Again, it is just a manual way of doing what Disable Roaming should do automatically (but sometimes doesn't).
Thanks. Also, do I need T-Zones for this phone, or -- in other words -- if I kept it, would I be able to get email that way?
Case in point. I am a US G1 user and I have been in Gent Belgium since Nov. 29. I am roaming on the Mobistar network my data roaming is shut off. I have $24.59 in extra charges from 40+ sms messages and a couple calls.
