sorry for my english
Unless things have made a drastic change, no. Verizon uses a CDMA technology using what is basically one specific phones finger print that cannot be transfered to another cellular device. GSM phones (like the g1) can only be used on GSM networks. How to tell? Check the back of the phone (under the battery, or close to it usually) for a sim card, If it works without one, It can only go CDMA, If it works with one, It can only go GSM.
Is it possible to use the G1 on the Verizon network if it's unlocked? I don't know much about Verizon's network, but after messing around with a G1 I've come to really like the device. I just don't want to switch to TMobile.

Sorry fumoh,
You cannot use the G1 on Verizon nor any GSM phone for that matter. The reason is both Verizon and Sprint are CDMA and they don't use SIM cards.
At&T/Cingular and TMO are GSM carries using SIM cards.
SIM cards are the worldwide platform which is why you can travel so much easier with them.
Although some would make an argument that CDMA is better quality because of its ability to penetrate buildings, GSM is used far more frequently and accepted worldwide.

After switching from Verizon to TMO, the fact that you can store contacts on the SIM and then download to any device of your choosing, that's priceless!
Hope this helps!
This is stupid. I paid $0 to get a legit unlock code from customer care.
The G1 does *NOT* need to be on the network for 90 days, your T-Mobile account only has to have been active (with another phone or phone number on the same bill as the G1) for 90 days.
I have my code and it is FULLY unlocked. You can call 611 to request and within 24 hours you get the unlock code for free via email response
Contrast that to the pain we all had to go through to unlock 2G iPhone's... There are legit reasons to unlock the phone that TMO understands - like being in a roaming country for an extended period - where a prepay would be more ideal than Roaming - even if you don't get full data. This is something Apple and AT&T didn't understand. Not all of us sell the phone sideways to go on a different network permanently.

Verizon is a completely different network type (CDMA). It wont work with any phone that does not require a SIM card.
After you unlock it don't you still have to pay the Ģ40 a month or w/e?
basically what im saying is, they give the phone away for free, so they make money on the monthly bill you pay, well if you aren't paying that monthly bill, then they have just given a phone away for free. Many shops/ sites also state in their T&C's that once you cancel you're contract, you must return the phone within 7 days of cancellation. Would somebody please talk me through how to go about getting a G1, without having the pay for a contract, or paying Ģ300 for it off ebay pre-unlocked etc.
Thank you.
when you cancel your contract you pay $200 which makes up to the price difference you got a discount for.
If you want to unlock any T-Mo phone (G1, BB,...) just call 611 customer service, and request unlock code/instruction. They will ask your email and you will get instructions in 24 hours. It is unlikely but if they ask why do you need it, just tell them that you travel abroad often and you want to be able to use your phone with foreign country operators, and because of often travel it doesn't make any sense for you to use roaming.
You donīt need to wait 90 days or pay someone to unlock it for you.

i actually unlocked my T-Mobile G1 at another website called http://www.thephoneunlockers.com again it worked fine, got the code in about 10 minutes. I think they charged me about 20 quid
Hadnt heard about the other site, but it seems there are a few people offering the solution, which I am very happy about.
I purchased G1 on ebay and it was network locked. I found many sites offering unlock for this phone but it seems www.fastgsm.com is cheapest one. Its just 20 USD. I gave it a try and now my cellphone is unlocked. Thank you.
