Google Voice has been around for a while now and it allows users to get one phone number for their home, mobile, and work. That is assuming that they can get in on the beta service, which is out of numbers right now and has a massive backlog of requests.

THE FASTEST AND EASIEST WAY TO ROOT
I've got it...if you don't want to bother giving everyone a new number (no number portability yet on GV), then you can forward your voicemail calls to your GV number and put your GV on do not disturb. Sure, you miss out on a lot of the live features (i.e. listen in to the message before answering, trading phones mid-call, having it ring on several lines at the same time, etc.), but you get visual voice mail with transcription...which, to me, is one of the best features.
I don't think they are out of numbers right now. I just got it today (though I had been waiting for a couple months) and it is pretty sweet. I even got a number with my name in it (there were lots available.) Now if only verizon would get a frickin' android phone so I could use the full feature set. Sorry to all you G-1 owners who are still waiting for one for taking your slot!
They are definitely NOT out of numbers, I got my invite a few days ago and there was a huge amount of numbers to choose from.
yeah theres plenty of numbers...
when filling out the request for a google voice number, theres a option to select that says you have an android device, and use your gmail address.. you will get the invite faster !!!

I have the G1, and the app seems to integrate well with the phone... mostly.
The only real frustration that I have with GV at the moment is that text messages seem to come from a different number than the contact I have on file. If I get a text from XXX-XXX-8802, it shows up as coming from a random number 406-565-XXXX number. It is almost as if GV has created a new number for all the contacts I have created.
Additionally, I receive notification from each text message twice. One from the G1 app, and the other in the from of a normal text message sent to my mobile number.
I'm hoping they work out the kinks, but it seems to be a great concept.
Google Voice is the Best innovation Google have now in my option. I got my invite for few weeks now. I love it. I use it all the time. It works with Wifi, 3G and Edge. Voice is very clear. Love the voice mail. I am some one never check my voice mail. Mail box is full since 2 years. Only reason I get too many junk ones it take forever to go one by one. After i go Google Voice its a easy as reading a SMS.
1 more thing I was very surprise was i recently went to Dominican Republic. I intalled the app "Toggle Data" so i dont get roming charge for my Data. My hotel had wifi which i was using to check my emails and etc. All sudden i got a call from my friend from a friend from State. I didnt pick up thinking its international charges involve. after a min later i get a message from Google Voice I got a Voice mail. Which only comes when some calls my google voice #. Then i was thinking does it work here as well? So i sent my friend a SMS asking which # he called and to call again if he call the Google Voice # and he did call me on my Google voice #. When he called back again I picked up and it worked. Chrystal clear voice. Then I was thing let me call him back! Which was the fan part it worked right away! after 30 min later I check my Tmobile bill and minutes to make sure its not using Tmobile service. when I even called Tmobile using google voice to see if any called are being made. So far zero min was used since i went on my trip.
It got me all excited and i end up calling all my buddies to call me on my Google Voice. I also use Magic jack which works like magic. Now with Google voice its like I have a Magic Jack build in my G1.
The last thing which was funny. I was waiting for a cab in the lobby. As I was wording around I seen some one using Skype to make calls using a Net book. Which works well I have used it. Then the guy was showing off to the Reception "oh you know you can make free calls just get this software" after secs later I got a call from my co-worker, just found out I can receive calls. She called to verify that its true. So i am on the phone repeating "yes, Google voice works, and yes its all free and yes I am using it through my G1, yes I can make calls too for free to the stats." I didn't intentional did to show off my G1, it was the girl kept on asking me and same question twice. The skype quy I seen him just looking at me. After i hang up the hotel rep comes to me and ask me "sorry to listen in but you said you can make free calls from your cell phone?" I told him "yes I can". Right away the Skype guy got up and asked me how i reply "Google, Google Voice". As I waited for my cab got swamped with question how it works bha bha bha. I was just answering them at my best of my knowledge. After 10 min when the cab arrived the Skype guy ask me "how much is that phone" i told him full price is 399 and if u get with contract its cheaper how cheap i dont know. then he asked me "how much for your phone" I said "what do you mean this phone i am using" he sia "yes" told him "sorry not for sale and plus Google voice is linked to your account you have get invited for me took me 3 month to get one." The guy look at me and said I will give you double what you pay $800.00 US give me your phone and your google voice account." (initially i paid $179.00 for my G1). I know many of your might say oh man your stupid should have done it. My Google account is part of my life right now I use it for everything. I love the Google company and their concept of making everything free for consumer. I had to tell him "Sorry, if i could i would take the offer but more then the phone my Google Account is too important to give away. its not for SALE!) The skype guy offered me up to $1,000.00 i still turned it down.
Anyways I just want to share it to your guy it was a fun and funny experience. Now I feel like i am Google Spoke person. Ever where i go who knows me ask me so much question about Google Voice sometimes i feel like I am unofficial Google customer rep...lol
Google You Guys are the best.. and superb.
