Default G1 - Importing Contacts and Emails

Will the G1 automatically sync/import ALL contacts and emails or can you specifically choose which ones you want to sync/import or view on the G1?

I have a ton of contacts that gmail created as only email addresses. I would like to keep them as contacts for when I'm using gmail but I would hate to have to import them all into my phone.

I also have a lot of email in my inbox. Will it all be synced to my phone? If so, I have a lot of inbox cleanup to do before the 22nd.

Can anyone point me to somewhere that explains exactly how email and contacts will be synced?

From videos the videos that google came out with show's when you first turn on the phone it will automatically ask you to sign into gmail where it will grab all your contacts.

It is advised you create contact "Groups", and put all contacts you want on your phone to be in a "Phone" group (contacts can be categorized into more then one group, work AND phone, for instance). When you get your phone, you should be able to tell it to ONLY pull down the "Phone" group from the GMail cloud.

As for mail, you will want to use labels to categorize your mail (kind of like mail folders on regular email clients), and then select everything and hit the "archive" button. That way, the phone will only pull down those messages for you to look at if you specifically tell the phone to load messages with a particular label (messages that have been archived are still there, but do not show up in Inbox view).

also remember that you can give out your gmail email as YOURUSERNAME+XXXX@gmail.com (e.g. android+junk@gmail.com) so when you sign up of websites you normally don't go to you can create a filter that finds all the emails sent to the "android+junk@gmail" and label it and/or send it to your junk folder.

Ever since I found this feature a while back, it has saved my life.

unfortunately many sites are stupid, and think that email addresses with plusses in them are invalid.

it works on a lot of sites, though.

Instead of adding the plus sign you can insert a period and you will get the same folder separation.
