can anyone explain this is more detail?
hellooo community !! Long time lurker, first time poster - i just received my new locked, unactivated G1 yesterday - and since I'm outside the US i'll just have to wait till an app or command line process is developed to jailbreak the G1 for use on our local telecom provider ( can't use the friend's SIM Swap trick, no T-Mobile in Dubai, may pay for the 20ish dollar code later)
but on the brighter side -
It looks like the some of the clever folks at XDA Developer Forums have figured out how to get ROOT access to the system via telnet, once you've telneted in - you have root access (how'd that slip by Google??!!) and one can then mount the entire directory as writeable.
The simple 8 step process (shamlessly copied from original thread, you'll need to get Pterminal from the Android Market to do this):
- Turn on your phone's WiFi or enable USB debugging and hook it up to your computer. This gives your phone an IP you can reach it at.
- Get to a command prompt on your device by using the PTerminal application from the Android Market. (adb shell does not seem to work with these instructions, telnetd does not start up)
- cd system
- cd bin
- telnetd
- netstat (get your phones IP)
- telnet into that IP
- you now have root!
That really improves the possibility for a jailbreak app. coming out soon !!
YAY !

can anyone explain this is more detail?
or in laymans terms preferably.
and Dubai FTW
"I'm shocked at the diversity of the people psyched for the G1. All different people united...under Android"
me confused
why does the g1 need to be jail breaked when it is open source?
I'm thinking android's code is open but not the phone itself hence the need to unlocking it. Since, shebanx lives in a different country that doenst have tmobile and no access to a branded simcard, the phone cannot be used. I could be completely wrong though. I was a poli sci major not complex computer speak.

I can't wait to be able to set custom icons and themes ! =]
allright lemme try and explain, when you have root access (sorta complete software control) to the G1's operating system - you can make changes to it via your PC/Mac/Linux box - provided you're a linux-android-uber-genius Guru and know what you're doing, you can also transfer files to it and basically make major/minor code-level changes to the OS - its exciting because it opens up the possibilties for an application or patch that would allow you to get the phone to work with any operator.
@vbreal - you're right Android is free and doesn't need to be jailbroken, but the G1 is currently tied-in to T-Mobile, it doesn't work with other operators without a SIM unlock code - "jailbreaking" would involve making changes to the phone's "internal organs" via a patch or software hack- that would allow the G1to work on any supported GSM network.
root access sounds fun...just waiting for the stupids touch it tho and kill their G1s by chmoding the wrong files or directories or editing the wrong files.
THEY WILL TAKE OVER!!!
