Just noticed this gem of a thread:

From that thread:
File Download: http://www.parrothd.com/tether-1.6.tar
1. Connect phone to computer via USB cable.
2. On the phone, select Mount on the USB connect Notification window.
3. Download the latest tether package and save it to the sdcard(G1 Storage).
4. DISCONNECT THE USB CABLE!!!
5. Open the Terminal Emulator application on the G1
6. Type:
su and press enter (Select Yes to the warning about superuser access)
7. type:
tar xf /sdcard/tether-1.6.tar and press enter
If there are no errors you can proceed..
8. Make sure the G1 wifi is disabled. (settings/wireless controls/Uncheck wi-fi enabled)
type:
tether start ( to start tethering)
tether stop ( to stop tethering)
9. Connect to G1 ad-hoc access point – Ensure Ad-hoc networks is enabled on your windows box .
On WidowsXP (start/settings/network connections/wireless network connection/properties/wireless networks/advanced/
(make sure Any Available Network is enabled)
Then select view wireless networks, you should see an ad-hoc network access point called g1, please note any can connect to this network and surf the internet. You should have dnsmasq assign your laptop a static IP address and then use IP tables to block unwanted access. This is not in this document! Also the G1 gets hot, no worries.
10. You must always be root to start/stop tethering. Open the terminal application, type su, then tether stop/start.

Now for some reason when I copied to my SDcard, it threw an extra ".tar" on there so if that happens for you, do this:
cd /sdcard
mv tether-1.6.tar.tar tether-1.6.tar
cd /
tar xf /sdcard/tether-1.6.tar
tether start
It's important that you jump back over to the root before you untar the file.
Either way, it's impressively quick! (I'm using 3G) If I didn't know better I wouldn't guess that I was actually wirelessly streaming through a phone and out through the phone's network.
This is by FAR one of the best reasons to root your phone.
Yeah i have been doing this for about 2 weeks with great results, if you ever drop down to edge though, its pretty slow. 3G is super fast though, but its a battery drainer alright.

Gas for some reason I cant get my laptop to see my G1. Went through the walk through you posted. Does not see it.
Im guessing I should su, then tether start and view my networks correct?
What OS are you running on the computer? Vista, XP, i know with Vista (what i have) you have to do some extra steps, but it still recognized the phone.
You SU
then do the tar command, and then do the tether start.
At the point your computer should see it, but it is also possible the your computer doesn't support ad-hoc connections.

i've done it everytime. I don't know if you have to, but does it work when you follow the steps including that command?
