    Default Themes vs. Wallpaper

People keep talking about "themes" for the phone, but from what I saw on the videos it only looks like you can change the wall paper. To me a tehem would consist of changing icons, colors of title bars, etc...

So does anybody know if there will be actual THEMES or just the ability to set the wall paper to whatever you want?

Usually when people talk about themes they are talking about changing icons, sounds, colors, etc.. in addition to the wallpaper.

There are no real themes yet. I would bet someone will write something like Summerboard/Winterboard on the iPhone for the G1 pretty quick. I'm interested to see the file structure and icon sizes and formats to see about replacing them myself manually.

I believe you can change your wallpaper and your sounds to whatever you want right out of the box (actually after you save the files and sounds to your SD card, my bad). The icons or other things will need an application.

I'd like to make one for myself. I had a Motorola V365 triplet from my job a while back, back before they required us to pay for our own phone plans. I used Moto4Lin to view its file system, and even hacked a few things that they don't let you hack with Motorola's own software. It was nice: I used Audacity to edit up some Star Trek: TNG beeps and blips and chirps, and made a custom startup and shutdown sound for it, incoming message sounds, and everything, all using Star Trek sounds. Made up a special Starfleet logo (I think it was the StarFleet Enginnering Corps logo) and got rid of the Moto stuff... It was slick. Great thing was, all this stuff worked on my wife's PEBL, too. Her dad has it now... I haven't hacked her sidekick (not open enough).

I'd like to do something similar with the G1 -- imagine, it's only a little smaller than a PADD... why not make an LCARS interface for it... all the buttons, icons, etc. in those awesome Star Trek TNG/VOY colors! Everything would be Haettenschweiler!

Yeah, it's the LX that she has, too. Thing was, I couldn't find a [free] program to let me browse the phone's internal filesystem by connecting it to a computer. That's how I like to do my stuff. That way I can back up the entire phone to another machine if I want to, before messing with stuff. I screwed up my work phone more than once, but as long as I didn't overwrite certain system files, I was able to keep it intact with a simple copy-back-to-the-phone-from-the-PC maneuver. That's why I loved the Moto4Lin package, but of course, it's Moto only, and even then, only on certain phones.
