As the topic asks. Has anyone rooted their HTC Dream/Magics yet? I want to know so I can possibly get some of the updated stuff designed by the people.
Rogers didn't put the touch keyboard on the Dream :/
HTC DREAM = G1
and yes it has been rooted.
so has the HTC MAGIC.
next time try google.
Black T-Mobile G1
Root'd (iHero)
I'm probably wrong but I'll ask anyway ... you need the actual rom of the version you're running to root the phone don't you? I'll have to do some more reading but every 'root' I've seen has required a downgrade to an older version of the OS to carry out the exploit but they've all been on T-Mobile G1's. I think Rogers has their own massaged release
I want the damn software keyboard too, I just dont want my phone to be unuseable if I try to root it using instructions and files not known to work for sure on the Rogers' released HTC Dream. I've been using Google to search as well as forums etc ... I still haven't seen anyone definitively say "I've rooted the Roger's HTC Dream successfully"
I'll keep poking around I was just hoping for more info so I dont destroy my device![]()
The Rogers HTC Dream won't take the RC29 ROM. I flash it twice and it still startup as Rogers ROM. This is the first step to get root and I don't think you cannot use the method out there. I think the bootloader and SPL are different.
from android forums:
"theoretically, you cannot flash any image, you first have to root the phone so you can change the "image signature" settings...
secondly, whatever you do, do not flash the rogers dream radio, with the T-mo G1 radio. The image contains the radio's firmware which is different between the USA G1 and Canadian Dream. You will brick your phone.
Last, there is no way to root it "yet", but haykuro is working on it. He says it's possible to do it from the SPL boot screen (camera button + power)."
crappy, but oh well. only a matter of time.
bluntegg has the solution for the soft kb!!
Taken from thread http://androidforums.com/android-app...keyboards.htmlCode:-download Apps Installer from Market. -go to 4shared.com and search for 'HTC_IME.apk', download it. -put that apk somewhere on your SD card. -install with apps installer (if you need to remove for some reason you can under Manage applications, there is a keyboard calibration one in there, but also a touch input... so maybe it's both? I didn't look before I installed, maybe someone can confirm this for me. EDIT: uninstall touch input if you need to get rid of it.) -then go to Locale & text and turn on Touch Input, adjust settings, try the tutorial.
I'm linking to the HTC_IME I used ... I tried a couple others but they were skinnedthe file contains a lib too ... pay no attention to it, you only need the apk file

Thanks again bluntegg!!
I tried several of the different rooting methods before I found this post. None of them were successful on my Canada based Rogers phone, they reported invalid model ID's or I could not get the telnetd to work.
I am just glad I did not brick my phone. Hopefully someone will find the answer to this.![]()
haykuro and rogers users are working on it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...5&postcount=38
if your an att or rogers user you should consider donating (rogers dream unlocked, works on att 3g)
there trying to save up enough money to send haykuro a rogers dream to root it
Sigh. Are all 500+ of your posts this useless and wrong??
Rogers has yet to be rooted – Maybe next time Google would be YOUR friend
Nothing worse on a forum then a member with a ton of posts spitting out regurgitated info that is misinformed. And then being smug about it! …Rolling his eyes and banging out the ol “use search” chesnut when they have no idea what they are talking about. Its one thing when a new member asks a simple question that has been asked 1000 times, but in this case you were way off. Both wrong and came off as an ass to boot!
Step back from the keyboard dude – Its time YOU did some reading!
Hold back your post replies until maybe you know what you are talking about.
