Any word on if Apps can be stored on the SD cards or just in the phone's internal memory? For my iPhone, I've resized the partition where the apps are so I can have things like ScummVM running with a few games.
Since I'll be storing videos/music and such onto a 8 or 16GB card (purchased from work, since I work for a memory company), I'm wondering if we can have programs run from the card or everything you download can only fit on the system's internal memory.
BTW, the 16GB Sandisk cards are only Class 2 right now while the 8GB cards on the market from all our suppliers are Class 4. (I haven't seen any class 6 yet.) (If we CAN save/run apps onto the memory card, this could also be a factor on which card to go with currently - a 8GB with a 4MB/s xfer rate or a 16GB with only 2MB/s...)
This is a really good question. I checked the user guide and didn't see anything indicating that it would allow the applications to be saved and run from the SD Card. The only reference it made was "View all the applications stored on your phone", which could go either way.
I really think it would be silly to not let you install apps to the memory card, since WM does it.
And, if you can get a really good deal on memory through employee discount, I'm sure you'd have some appreciative people here.
judging by the fact that you have to "mount" the card, that leads me to believe it's completely possible to run things off the card. I don't have to tell my Wing that I'm putting in a card so it can get ready for it, it just is always ready. The fact that the G1 needs to shore up a connection to the drive means it probably needs to use some of that memory itself, and it should be okay to run things off the card.
but that's just my guess.
I think the mounting of the card is simply due to the way Linux mounts...well...every thing. If we think about android as a Linux OS and not a phone OS, it makes perfect sense. In Linux you have to mount any storage medium you want to use (flash drives, hard drives, cd/dvds, floppys, etc) during which you specify a mount point for it. My guess is there will be a folder called "Storage" or something similar that the microSD mounts to.
I guess what this all boils down to is that I can't see it not having the technological capacity to do the install to the microSD, but whether or not the installer will do it is a different question. The installer may be hard coded to a specific location. Even if this is the case, I'm sure its simply a matter of time before Google either "fixes" it or someone makes a new installer.
http://www.memoryx.net/tf8gbsd.html - 8GB, which could probably be around $28 each for forum members, maybe less.
The 16GB (and I'm guessing here) would be around $70. I asked one of our sales guys to hit up our Flash manager (since we don't currently stock 'em). I was quoted a price and told to give them a few days lead time to order them. (I figure I'll tell them on Friday before the Android arrives and we should have them by Tuesday or Wednesday.) I'm torn between the 8GB in stock NOW because it's Class 4, or just order the 16GB even though the first ones are only Class 2. Will it really be that big of a difference?
Fun fact - In 1991 when he worked at Apple designing internal modems, on the side Andy Rubin ran my first ISP - Spies in the Wire. He gave me my first unix shell account.![]()
Just found this:
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSOiQsYLrEA[/ame]
It shows an apk being installed. I did not see anywhere to specify where it goes. So if its not done in the installation, it may be in the settings?

I didn't know that about LINUX, thanks for the info. Give the relatively small size of the onboard memory, it would be a major flaw to not let things run off the SD Card. My wing lets certain apps run off the SD card, and when I install a cab it asks where I want it installed, internal memory or storage card. Some apps will probably need to be on the internal memory, but little apps, (like a picture editor, games) that don't need a close connection to the OS should be okay on the SD Card.
Now we wait to find out![]()
