Does anyone know if any applications are going to be created to allow the G1 to use tethering? I would like to use the G1 as a modem. I've cancelled my home cable. And I currently use my cell phone as a modem to dial into the internet to watch online TV shows/movies. I would like to do the same with the G1 phone.
I was told tethering is not allowed with the new G1 phone. The iPhone is about to release a new application to allow tethering. Does anyone know if an application is being developed so the G1 can allow tethering?
I've spoken with T-Moblie engineers and bloggers and no one seems to have an answer.
Someone will no doubt write an App for this as they have allready for the Jailbroken iPhone. When it does appear it will be a MAJOR test case of just how open t-mobile are willing to be as it would put serious load on their systems if lots of people start doing this and downloading large quantities of data.
There is bound to be one, but I can't decide if it's a good or bad thing.
One thing that is definitely negative is that although T-Mobile claims they won't block it, they obviously don't approve of it. I would enjoy the application for occasional use if I'm on the road and need to get online with a laptop, but most people don't have that much self-control and will gladly saturate the bandwidth with P2P networks. When this occurs, you might see the "open" platform become a little more restricted, as well as actions taken towards high-bandwidth users.
Thats one thing that I'll miss about my T-Mobile Dash when my G1 gets here.....
Please just get a real router. That would Definitely slow down tmo's 3G which would force them to put a limit BACK on the plans. They probably set a limit then took it off just to show people that there is a possibility of a limit for over usage.
Everyone should use tethering. I've cancelled my monthly $100 Comcast cable. I use my cell phone as a modem. And my 42 inch plasma TV is my monitor. I log on to watch TV shows/movies online for free www.hulu.com
Geuss no one cares about slowing down the network, they might when a limit gets put on their account. Tmo states that abusers will have limited access.
You canceled cable for dial up speeds? wow... what era do you live in? as an unexperienced 3ger i cant imaging it being much faster than dial up and im sure its less than DSL.
but $100 for cable is way to much, epecially for comcast. get insight or something with your cable provider that gets you phone tv and internet for that price and stop wasting other peoples phone bandwidth.
