This is just me thinking outloud, like everyone else I have no knowledge on this.
My thought was simply, if you can download apps to the memory card, surely you could then take out the card and load it in a PC, transfer it and then give it to all your friends. Obviously this would not matter with Free Apps, but surely the people who write Paid for apps will not like this and would want the apps in internal memory where they are (theoretically) more secure.
I'm not sure what happens on the iPhone, is there a market in illegal copied apps?

The apps that we downloaded did not go on the memory card. It will not be so simple, they have thought of all angles in order to keep developers from being cheated.
so whats the point of having a 16GB card if all you can do with it is take pics.

I dont buy the reason... probably cos I dont dig it...
If you buy an app you should have sole rights to it, and do as you please. So If I have 2 or 3 G1's I'll have to buy the same app 2 or 3 times?
I think this may just be a deficiency, otherwise I will be writing an app that will allow you to chose where you want to save the .exe file to.
This is supposed to be Opensource... Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

As far as I know its for pictures, video, music anything. It is really an odd issue. We were using an 8GB card and after about 30 apps we were getting low memory errors.

They haven't considered the angle that says that limiting their customers' space for apps to what's left over in 256 MB after the OS and settings have taken what they need will cause this platform to be a complete failure.
I'm 99% positive the fix on the 20th is to make apps go to microSD. (Others have already posted how to make them go there using a workaround.)
There will have to be other safeguards such as checking the phone's serial number to make sure it is the phone it was purchased for. I'm sure there will be some type of EULA that will tell us if we can use it on more than one phone.
Can't do it on the iPhone, doubt it will be "OK" on the G1.
maybe they will do how u buy songs on itunes.. and the only way to use it on another computer.. u have to have email adress and passwrd
What I mean is... Developers dont get restricted on their apps, why should end users get restricted? This is VERY UNFAIR.
I am pretty sure those who develope donation-ware make more money from goodwill than those who just develope software for money...
Programming is fun, even though you derive an income/revenue. Every programmer wants to see their product in the community.
Besides programming is about reusability, so all programmers use one part or another of someone else's code, why does this have to be shut down at the end of the "foodchain"?
