hm so on the getting started PDF, it gave intructions on how to connect to a wifi network, looks like u have to turn it on first?

this contradicts the "the G1 will automatically connect to wifi networks w/in range" statement

who knows if itll be like that when the phone is in peoples hands, but thought i'd point it out.

Im thinking because some people probably want to turn it off or it will come turned off by default so they want you to know how to turn it on. Any laptop I have bought has had the wireless option turned off by default so I believe this would most likely be the same.

I agree, I'm sure once we read through the the entire manual that it'll clarify this.
