    Default G1 vs. jailbroken iPhone

i have heard about android being an open source firmware(not sure if thats the right word to call it) but wouldnt a jailbroken iPhone allow you to do just that and more?

im not sure if im 100% correct here but.
3rd party iphone applications will never be able to run in the background and even if the jailbreak allowed this to happen the application will not be designed to work well in the background (notifactions and shizniz)

also with the jailbroken iphone you have to stay a patch behind pretty much untill next one is hacked? 3g can be jailbroken? also gotta consider all the other differences between iphone and g1 physical keyboard compass etc etc.

Android is an OS and open source. It's based on Linux. All that crap on iphone is not open source, the OS, the apps..not even close. Maybe some apps are but I can assure you nothing Apple provides isn't.

I've done my fair share of reflashing and hacking of a cell phone, a Wii, and a couple wireless routers but all of those items required a lot of work once. An iPhone requires doing it over again with every update--no thanks.

(especially inconvenient if you're the type with a real life )

It was my understanding that the Apple SDK license was incompatible with open source licenses. If true, the only way to get open source code on your phone is to jailbreak it.

You dont necessarily have to be 1 firmware update behind.. you just have to wait a bit until it is hacked. And it is not necessary to constantly update your phone. I used 1.1.3 jailbroken for 8 months without restoring the phone.

I mix both Cydia / Installer apps along with "App Store" apps on my iphone. The ones that aren't allowed on the App Store such as "MxTube" i just simply get from cydia. Not a big deal really, theres no incompatability issues.

A Program on Cydia called "backgrounder" allows for true running apps in the background. I can easily run Pandora, fire off a few texts, and browse the web with no slow downs or issues.

I like both my iphone and G1, but come on guys. yes the G1 is a good phone, but thats not a reason to put down the iphone. "Iphone sucks!!" /sarcasm.
