You can use the phone without a data plan as I have for the past 2 days, you just cant get any data. They messed up and instead of switching my bb plan to g1 just deleted the bb part. I have been on the phone all day without a data plan, and if you want to sign a contract for 2 years and sell the phone you might as well.
I bet you all you have to do is go to mytomobile.com login and you can remove the data as fast a poop, all you have to say if someone even asks or if a charge shows up is say that you broke/lost/sold the phone.
You are getting the cheap price because you are signing a 2 year contract period.

If I buy the phone with a 2 year contract and a data plan, can I cancel the data plan after a month or two regardless of what they are saying about not being able to cancel the data plan ever? Am I going to have any kind problem or pay any kind of fees for canceling?
so if I cancel the data plan, can I use it on wifi and do things like synchronizing with gmail, downloading application, watching youtube videos and so on?....
Just as a side note, if I have 4 months left on my two years contract and when I buy the T-mobile G1, is there anyway I can get it for $179 at the full discount?
Thank You for your reply.

so, are you saying that you *had* to have the one G1 with a dataplan to set up the non-dataplan G1?Based on this test, you can see that it's possible to set up the phone using a SIM card that has a data plan and then change to another SIM card afterwards without losing your setup.

So, how/where were you able to get a G1 without a dataplan at all?
By the way; my son bought a blackberry with a dataplan, and he was able to cancel the dataplan within the first month, no extra charges. Very easy to do; he just called them up and told them he no longer required it. I'll bet anything it's similar for the G1. I believe that salespeople will say whatever they have to to maximize $$$ from a sale, and that most people would just buy it. (i suppose slimy salemen are a topic for a different thread)
No, I've set two different G1 phones using two other accounts that ONLY had T-zones.
I bought the phones on one phone number and used them for another phone number that does not have the plan. Also, I bought multiple G1s on one phone number using a loophole that another AC member reported. Basically, you could purchase as many G1s as you wanted at the 179.99 price until your plan got converted over. This may no longer be possible. It's not. The data plan for the G1 is VERY locked down compared to any other phone T-Mobile currently offers. You can add/delete a data plan online for a Blackberry at will. Not so for the G1.
Please see a recent post where I detail what I think the limitations of T-zones/WiFi are:

I'm currently using my G1 without any SIM card, but via WLAN. I'm able to check my mails, use maps and calender (syncing works wonderfully), but what I can't do is downloading and installing marketplace apps (though I can browse them, but when downloading I always receive "download unsuccessful"). As soon as I put my SIM back in, it works again (no data plan, so I'm charged for every MiB or something, but it is 3G / UTMS).
I have a G1 with data plan and my wife has a regular phone with a text message plan. We are on a T-Mobile family plan. I was thinking of buying a used G1 for my wife, and switching her sim card to it. She doesn't want the data plan, but would like to use the G1 on Wi-Fi. My questions are:
1) Could we just put her sim card in a G1 and could she log into her existing Gmail account, and would it be basically plug and play?
2) It wouldn't be necessary to unlock the G1 would it?
3) Could she make and receive phone calls, send and receive text messages, use the internet on Wi-Fi, and browse the Market and download aps?
4) What would be the best way to lock the G1 out from trying to hook up to 2G/3G data services?
5) Would we have to notify T-Mobile of the change, or not?
YES YOU CAN!! YOU DO NOT NEED A DATA PLAN TO USE THE G1!
This is what I did:
I'm a former Suncom customer and I bought a G1. T-Mobile told me that in order to use it I had to switch plans and add a $35 data plan. I didn't want to do that.
I found a friend who already has the data plan to get the G1 pass the initial activation screen. You just put your friend's SIM card in your G1, activate it, then put yours back in.
After that call T-Mobile and add on an internet package. I got the $15.99 package but you can get a cheaper one. If they're like "Oh I see you have a G1?" just tell them you have a Dash or Wing or some other smartphone. They'll just be like "Ok." It may take like 2 hours to activate but after that your G1 will work fine. The only thing mine won't do is the IM application that comes with the G1 but everything else works fine. And I'm technically on a Suncom plan.
This web site explains everything: http://www.gruups.com/tzones/
There's always a way around things. I can't believe people are actually paying $35/month for cell phone internet!! T-Mobile is crazy. If they ever tell you to change your plan or something don't do it. Research online. They're just looking to make money and lock you in a contract for another 2 years.
Forgot to add:
If you already have T-Mobile you could just add the data plan, activate your phone, change the settings, then call and change it.
i live in bermuda have a g1 i am on prepaid and can use without data plan no restrictions howeher in my apn if i change the mmc number i can get data but it will eat my mobile minutes so i onlly use it as a backup if no wi fi however depending on the services avaliable to you you may need a data plan my phone had to be activated with a service i do not use and then go back to my original service provider however i can use g1 the way in which it was intended
