Seems like a good idea but I ask for a replacement and they send me the box that has the phone and the envelope to send the "defective" one. In the box what does it contain? The phone of course but what about the 3.5mm adapter? I remember when I had problems with my Samsung T-619 (I had to send it in 6 times and eventually they let me get the KRZR) all they did was send me the phone WITHOUT the battery and the envelope to send the defective one. So if I ordered a replacement for the G1 would they do the same? If they did that really wouldnt help the 3.5mm adapter and battery problem since i am just using my old battery... Is there something specific I have to ask for?
Damn I hope I don't get a refurbished unit, but they did told me to ship back everything that was included with the original unit(except the sim card), so probably not, well gonna find out on Tuesday.
Replacement phones have better battery life not because of battery but all the updates that recently took place. Battery quality it seems is totally ok - it is just OS using to much of the battery.
I did not quite understand your question but once you get UNIT without back cover and no battery - just bare bone unit - you got Refurb with no doubt.

I'm wondering if I should just take my phone into the store and have them do the return there instaed of having the hassle of sending it back
The past few days my phone has become excessively squeeky and creaky, sounds as if I'm walking on old wooden floors. I just called customer care and told them about the issue and they are sending me a new device via express with no charge.
Of course for them to do the exchange, they had to do some troubleshooting and wanted to wipe the device... Kind of funny since the software has nothing to do with the hardware issue. I just pretended I did it and everything was good to go.
Getting a replacement phone, just called in. My phone creaks horribly.
