I found what the problem was in my situation, but I can't guarantee that it the same for all of you.
Basically, it was how I was categorizing my groups. I started separating my contacts by work - male/female, family - male/female, friends - male/female, etc. from my Gmail account (not in the phone).
After testing one group, I found out that you can't assign ringtones to a group, so I began deleting the group (again, in gmail) but did not remove the contacts from that group in some cases. Apparently, this screws something up on the phone, and it will not update the contacts that were in the group. The only solution I could come up with was to recreate the deleted group, add everyone back to that group, save, remove the contacts from the group, then delete the group again.
Details on the solution can be found here(#2):

I have submitted a list of bugs that I found to the Android support team, but have had zero luck with them acknowledging the issue.
Hope that answers your question.

I'm having a different problem from what I'm seeing here but this seems the closest forum for help.
The guy at the Verizon store mistakenly loaded all my contacts from my gmail account instead of taking them off my Blackberry. I only use gmail for a back-up account.
I took it back the next day and asked him to delete all the google contacts (they are not current) but the contacts list on my new HTC Droid Eris is still all clogged up with old google gmail contacts.
He instructed me to download drivers from HTC and sync with my PC Outlook from home. I did this successfully but the original google contacts are still there.
Do I have to go back to the Verizon shop to have this cleaned up? Or is there a way I can do it myself (aside from manually deleting each unwanted google contact)??
See that the thread goes back to 08? But I have a situation now ( Mar 2010) were Gmail contacts are automatically udated to my Verizon DROID - but the alphbetical order for some records are by First name and not the last. Input screen on gmail contacts shows last name first... records appear entered the same, what's happening?
This may not be the proper place to post, if not where might I get an answer
