Google Contacts Sync Issue

Hey guys, anybody having issues syncing google contacts with your phone (or vice versa) ?
Gmail and Calendar sync fine, but I keep getting "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly."
Unfortunately, 'shortly' has been since June 30th, the day before I received the Hero.

I know this is not a root issue since I had the phone for a few days sans rooting. I also tried syncing via edge and wifi, but same issue.

I searched and saw similar issues on the G1, but that has been unresolved.

Any fellow hero owners have any issues with syncing Google Contacts?

FYI, this seems to be a conflict with MyBackup Pro.
The only way to 'fix' everything, based on what I see, is to input all the contact by hand into your gmail contacts and delete everything on the phone. Sync.

I'm still having issues with this - my contacts have not managed to successfully sync in over 2 weeks!

Just keep getting the message that there is a problem, and it will be back shortly.

I had this problem, I just went to the sync settings in Settings then kept clicking Sync (on mail in my case) until it stopped giving me the error message and then it synced.

I fixed this issue, Gmail was turned off (even though I could access Google Contacts).

The phone needs and active Gmail account to sync contacts.

Im having simular issues.
I imported all my sim contacts so they are "phone" contacts. These wount sync to google.

I can recive gmail contacts just fine, but not upload them.

Anyone got any suggestions where i can start to debug this? No errors, the phone says there is nothing to change or something like that. So no errors no nothing

This might be because they are not of the "Google" category when you loaded your contacts from the SIM.

This is what I did and I haven't had any problems at all.

Before I got my Hero, I added all the numbers on my Address Book (I'm using a Mac, the application on there) and then synced that to Google. Mind you, I don't have many contacts (45 or so) and it didn't take me a while. Didn't mind having to do it manually either.

Then when I got the phone, I did the set up in the beginning and all my contacts were synced just fine. Maybe a factory wipe might help, but that is going a bit extreme.

I came across this thread when I was trying to fix a problem with events on my phone not appearing in my Google calendar. Here's another fix if you're an Orange UK user.

Go to your Orange account online, go to the details page and choose the option 'I prefer to allow adult content on my phone'. I've selected that and events sync just fine now. No idea why!

Sorry - I know this suggestion sounds a bit suspect, especially from someone with a user name like Chihuahua (which is the name of my new glam surf band by the way).

I stumbled across a solution. In Gmail Contacts>More actions select 'find & merge duplicates'. After I did this action my contacts are syncing with my phone.

It was driving me crazy having this sync issue with my contacts and nothing seemed to work until I like the last guy stumbled across the merge dups option in gmail seems to have solved the problem for now or at least I hope
