It's not very reliable, even in the Baltimore City area. The rest of the maps work fine (i.e. finding locations), but pinpointing My Location is spotty at best. This is what happens pretty often:
Menu> My Location
"Trying to determine your location.."
"Your location cannot be determined. We will keep trying, but you can also try moving your location."
Has any witnessed this problem, yet?
Make sure your GPS is on.
Mine has never showed me that, and has always been amazingly accurate, this is my 3rd phone with a real GPS (other 2 had tomtom software turn by turn tho) and seems to be the most accurate, just needs a better software.
Mines act pretty wierd at times.
Like just now I just turned on the maps and just hit "My Location" and it's well... couple of blocks WAY off of my actual location. Yet it seems to take awhile to actually become accurate when i start driving around. The times I needed it when driving though it has been there for me, but I'm still somewhat concerned about the GPS actually just pinpointing me while I'm laying @ home :\
Spring is upon us! Woo hoo!!

Obviously the problem is you not understanding how GPS words, you have to be outside or in a car for this power level of GPS. Now you said that it worked while you were in a car. Bingo. Stop playing with GPS while sitting around in your house, school, or office building and start using it the correct way. Thanks, and next time ,google search and wiki.
i have the same problem, and i live in a gps covered area. basically, if gps isnt on, forget it, because you probably wont get an accurate fix on your location
Using GPS seems to be much more reliable. Just tried enabling that, and it's much better.
I am experiencing this problem as well. Inside or outside with a strong 3G connection, I will often get the error you mention below when I select "my location." I am not referring to the inaccuracy of location determination as others mention in this thread, but the complete inability to determine location as indicated by the error.
With GPS enabled, I will also get the error unless the GPS "satellite" icon has established a solid connection (no blinking green icon). A solid GPS signal is pretty hard to get inside, so I don't rely on GPS at all.
I find that the problem occurs on 3G at work and at home which is 2 different cell towers with good coverage. A co-worker with a G1 has no problems getting his location when he is standing right next to me at work, so I suspect a hardware issue. The error is confusing since approximate location should always be available via cell tower data (EDGE/3G).
Rebooting my phone restores the ability to get approximate location (EDGE/3G)... but that doesn't stick.
Considering a different G1 doesn't have this issue while in the same location, I will probably seek a replacement phone.
I am in the San Francisco area.
Idc what anyones says the gps has only worked for me maybe 1/3 of the times that i use it (yes out side looking at the clouds, gps on 3g on and good bars.) it seems to but me to the same 3 spots in diffrent towns. Could these be the nearest cell towers or what? Its mos def. Buggy must be the new network but im not knockin it still love the phone
What i've noticed is once your enable GPS, it takes a couple minutes for it to find a satellite. Are you waiting long enough after you've enabled GPS?
