How long to activate 3G

hi I just got my G1 at the store but I can't log in to my phone because I am thinking my 3G is not activated yet. How long does it normally take? SO I can't do anything with my phone until I get 3G service?

I had no data plan with tMo before and my upgrade took effect as soon as I put my old sim in my new G1 yesterday morning...

I called but they told me that since many people are getting the phone today it could take up to 48 hours!

you don't have to have 3g service. you can use edge. you must have a data plan. data plans can take up to 48 hours to activate after adding it. so depending on when you added the plan you may be waiting for the data provisioning.

I didn't have any data plan before and mine came up straight out of the box.

was yours sent to you? if so, you had to select the data plan while pre-ordering. otherwise i don't know what to say, you cant use the phone unless you login to your gmail account, you couldn't login to a gmail account without a data plan.

My phone arrived yesterday and we don't even have 3G in tulsa, everything worked fine and still does.

i don't have 3G on my G1 and my internet works, granted it's on EDGE and it's not that fast, but it's faster than i anticipated.

according to t-mobile's website, i should be in a 3G area, but i just switched my phone on my.t-mobile.com last night, so i'm crossing my finger that it will work soon. I don't know what's up... but i was able to sign in and "surf" the web right out of the box.
