I think you meant will they be selling them in a 2g area?

If so, they are supposedly only going to have them 2-5 miles outside of a 3g coverage area at the store. In 2g areas, they'll have a demo and then will show you how you can order them online.

I'm in a 2g area, however it's still an awesome phone and being that my "area" is comprised of over half a million people, I'm sure that we'll be next in line along with Mobile to get 3g after Birmingham.

I think that people using this phone in a 2G market will be severly disappointed due to the limitations the slow network will put on the phones capabilities. An open WiFi connection isn't always available, so most of the time you will be using the G1 with EDGE. This will limit some of the features that have been glorified by T-Mobile/HTC/Google. Sure you could use the "compass" with EDGE, but will it have the same wow-factor as it does on 3G? Absolutely not...the same goes for other apps that rely heavily on a speedy 3G connection.

On the video on Engadget, guy said that on 2.5G network it was taking ~5 seconds to refresh using the maps app, and that it was the most data intensive app. So it probably would be tolerable, but EDGE I imagine would be horrible.

What do you mean exatly by "come out"? Are you saying that the day they arrive at peoples homes they will also be in stock in stores? So you can preorder the phone, get it on the 22nd but you have to wait around your house all day for delivery (or have it sit on your porch?) while other people go to the store on the 22nd when it suits them and get the phone? If the price is the same, it seems like far less of a hassle to just drive to the store first thing and grabe one. If anyone knows for a fact that they will be available in stores on the 22nd I would love to know. I am eligible for a full discount on the 5th of October and have heard the presale stops on the 3rd.

I'll just take my tracking number into a TMO store and pick it up, I'm fairly certain it will be super easy, but we shall see.

That is silly, this is the biggest thing to happen since the iPhone for the mobile gaming industry, I'm camping out for my white one for sure It is the first Android device, I mean come on. Plus if you read the fine print, they tell you that the delivery date may vary. I ordered my Blackberry Pearl and it definitely did not show up the day they said it would. I still don't believe that they will be in stores on the 22nd.

There's a flaw to the whole thing. The reason there's a per-order is to make sure you will get the phone and you don't have to wait in line for it.

Now let's say it becomes a much bigger hit than they expect. They end up being out of stock and you find out you have to wait a week before they get more.

And guess what? You just return the package to UPS.

If you really want white, you just have to wait in line in front of the store that is in 3G. That's what I will do.

As for people who says there won't be a line for it, keep in mind the phone is only available to stores that is in 3G. That means several people will end up traveling to stores that is in 3G.

By saying 2.5G, he means EDGE. Some people consider EDGE 2.75G and technically it falls into 3G according to the standards.

As fancy as StreetView looks, it isn't really that data intensive. It's merely some images that are rendered to make it look 3d-ish.

Yeah but when the iPhone launched it was revolutionary, since then there have been several phones with similar technology that came out. Every phone I've ORDERED from TMO has come the day they told me.

And yeah, to US it's the first Android device, but you think the majority of people know/care about that? You think if Samsung put out the iPhone there would've been as big of a draw as there was? Obviously there's people excited about this phone, but I can't imagine it drawing lengthy lines of people a la the iPhone.

I am a Store Manager for T-Mobile Corporate. The method that "roberta" has given you will surely not get you the white version. All it will do is make you wait another week and hours spent on the phone with customer service as to why you need them to resend your preordered phone back to you. With my personal experience when dealing with customer service, ALWAYS speak to a different rep about things. they will almost ALWAYS have a different answer than the first one gave you, and most of the time they are giving personal idea's not facts. So be very careful when following directions that don't seem like a corporation would allow. If you really want the white version you will just have to stick it out to October 22nd. The phone's that we get in store are reserved to customers purchasing the phone in store. No preorder pickups or transfers are allowed.
