How to register new phone without data plan?

I just got a new T-Mobile G1 that I planned to use with my T-Mobile To-Go account and WiFi hotspots. Is there a way to register the phone over WiFi? My T-Mobile account does not (and cannot) include a data plan. If not, can I register it with someone else's SIM card then switch to my own card?

True. There are several threads, all dealing with various uses of the G1 without a data plan. None of them deal with the issue of activation though I suspect the issue is the same. It appears that you cannot register, use or continue to use a G1 Android without a data plan from a phone company.

Why there should be such a restriction when you pay full price for a device is beyond me!

i really don't know the details of it, and I suspect that its different for one side of the pond as opposed to another.

but I also have been led to believe you can do just about whatever you want also...

anyway try searching some of the above linked search threads see if you can find something closer.
