Does anyone know what the status on this is? I did the reset and freed up a ****eload of memory but I haven't gone back to look at the market place apps because I don't want to use up all my friggen memory again.

It's really stupid that we can't browse the damn market place without using up all the memory

i browse the market almost every single day and havent had an issue. just stop obsessing over how much free memory you have. it's not a bragging point. it will clear when it needs to. just relax.

    10 MB - internal memory.

    17 MB - Market.

That's where I'm at, last time I checked.

    Current memory for Market: 3MB

    Available space: 13MB

    # of Applications downloaded: 48

I'm not really anxious to have to go thru the hassle and time of doing a reset and re-customizing my phone again, to gain back memory space hogged by the Market, only to have it start building back up again -- because I won't stop visiting the Market.

Particularly so now, since starting Jan 1, some applications will start costing $, but any applications that we already have downloaded onto our G1 will remain free (I verified this fact with a T-Mo rep). So I want to make sure that of what is available thru Dec 31, I have downloaded all applications that are useful to me.

Hopefully T-Mo will give us an update soon that will allow us to clear Market cache and this particular problem will be solved. I spend quite enough time as it is tinkering with this device. I don't want to go over the edge into full-blown geekdom and become obsessive about doing reset after reset, to gain back bits of memory, as some have done.

The space used up by the market cache clears out if you need the space. It does this automatically so it doesn't matter if you have 17MB or 33MB used up by the market. When you run low on space it clears out the market cache.

Just don't think about it. You'll get the memory back if you really need it.

Just to test this out (and get my space back!) I installed a lot of the larger game demos last night, taking my free space down to about 3MB, I then did some browsing, made a bunch of bookmarks, etc. till it kept warning me about space. I looked and 0MB free! So I rebooted my phone, and imagine this, a few apps crashed when i first started them out, but after a moment it was responsive again, and I looked and saw the ~20MB the market took up was back to normal. I uninstalled the apps I used to fill it up, and now I have 40MB free (oh and I cleared the browser info out).
So yeah, don't worry about it, if you really run out of space, it clears it up. You can also use Cyrket to browse the new market files, and manually search for those you decide to install.
