I've never needed to do a factory reset. I don't intend to ever do one as long as I use the phone, nor do I think I'll ever need to. Like smoger said, I fail to see the point. This reminds me of users who reinstall Linux over and over, every time they have a problem they con't figure, or who think they have to reinstall Windoze every year or so to keep it running right. It ain't so. I never do reinstalls of either one. I run both Linux and Windoze installs just fine for years, 'til a hardware failure or upgrade forces a reinstall.
If I ever run out of memory I'll uninstall some stuff I don't much need , clear the browser cache or something. Why go through all the custom setup I've done again?

i think its more of the point you shouldnt hafta go thru all of that for a brand new "top of the line" phone you just bought and signed into a two year agreement for, only weeks into it to have a memory problem.... thats like buying a car and having to have engine work done instantly, or duct tape stuff on the car so it wont fall apart... you buy something you expect it to work sensibly at least...

I kind of agree.
I've gone through my installed apps, and many of them I never use, so I delete them.
When the phone is new, I imagine we're all downloading and trying out new programs.
Once you've had the phone for a few weeks, check and see which programs you've installed, that you're still using.
I think most people with 50+ apps probably aren't using quite a few of them, but I guess I could be wrong.
remember these steps are for the ones that want to keep every single app they download. cuz obviously u can uninstall what u don't need n get all ur memory back, but i haven't see the market cleaning any cache data by it self... this procedure isn't 4 everyone

Thanks for the legwork Shaky, your correct! I had 33mb on memory, did reset and then reinstalled my downloads w/o leaving the market and ended up with 59mb, it sucks setting up my desktop again but well worth it!
its def worth doing the factory reset for the space, plus it seems like the internet cache doesnt clear itself completely, but it does free some space.

if your G1 isnt on the official RC30 update you can try to route ur internet cache, street view cache, and market cache to your microSD..its what i have set mine up to...but you will need to jailbreak your g1, which is not hard at all..
