I just got my first bill... I went to the UK for 12 days. I asked for International calling & text to be added, which they did. Calls were $99 a min and texts were 35c each. I was told about the high charge data plan. So before I left, I did the following:
- Turned off data roaming
- Turned off data sync
- Turned off 3G.
Now, my bill just landed and the data roaming charge is $102.85. I am seeing $0.15 charges (0.0097Mb on average) for the whole trip every 3 to 7 minutes. (nothing between the hours while I slept).
Any idea what could have caused these? And should I contest them with t-mobile?
Could it be the location feature (using the wireless cell network)?
Calls were almost $100.00 a minute?
Well certainly contest them with T-Mo. I'll be going from the US to France and Germany for three weeks the end of Dec.
I normally (pre-G1) set my phone to forward all calls to another US number while travelling and just use text while travelling. Now, I will like to use the wifi feature ONLY on the G1. I will definitely need to know how to set up the phone to do this and not have any charges at all except for text.
Please call T-Mo and let us know what happened.
Well I just got off the phone with tmob, and a csr and supervisor. They won't reduce the charges. I was told that the way the g1 works, it always requests internet data, even if data roaming is off, or data sync is off. He said its similar to how the sidekick works.
What a pos. My tmob store did not tell me that.. so the csr rep told me to go to them.
Anyone else been abroad with it?
When in Rome, do Airplane Mode, that makes the phone be a vegetable
What a bunch of B$$^&%^!
They're gonna charge you for having your phone ON in a foreign country?
That, my friend, is what you call highway robbery. Call customer retention. Tell them you're cancelling your service. I would. Use the AT&T threat. Seriously. You took steps to stay within the limits of voice and SMS and they charged you for data nonetheless to the tune of over $100?
That's not the T-Mobile I used to know.
I know, it is utter BS. I wonder if the iPhone or Blackberry acts like that? Seriously, this should be reported on - so I am going to contact all the tech news sites (this one, android guys, engadget, gizmodo etc) and let them know. The charge is not huge, its just the principal of it, and the fact that it is an utter BS charge.
Surely someone else has traveled from the USA to another country with a G1.
Yes 99 cents a minute - thanks for clarifying.
BTW - I have an article up on Gizmodo right now, already viewed 1500 times - thanks Gizmodo!!
