so i called cust service and was told that if you remove the data plan from the phone the phone would only work for emergency 911 calls and to call customer service 611.
is the above true?
so... what happens if down the road people need to drop the data plan due to financial reasons???
what is going on???

yep not true... the phone will just basically be another phone imo without internet... sure theres wifi, but come on
Buy the rumor, Sell the news.
Actually, the phone is quite useful without a data plan! It took me 2 days to realize I didn't have one! There's WiFi just about everywhere.

wow then some of these tmobile reps are really shrude then huh??? bastards... lying to customers is not nice.
A data plan does not have to to do anything at all with a voice plan and or your ability to place emergency calls
cant put this damn phone down...
Although from a technical aspect you guys are correct, that the phone could be used. But I believe what customer service told the guy was true.
Purchase of the G1 requires a contract with an eligible data plan. Though the phone should work without it, T-Mobile will brick it for you if you cancel the plan.
That is my understanding from day 1.
And though many will respond...how unfair...
It was VERY clearly stated in every official discussion of the phone. Even when you pre-order it took you to a special page that said YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE A DATA PLAN TO USE THIS PHONE...choose one below.
Well if you first buy the phone, you need to have data to activate it. So it's useless except for making emergency calls.
If you manage to activate it and then remove the data plan, it will continue to work for voice.

You just won't be able to get the Android Operating System Firmware updates (OTA). And yes, this is confirmed.
