Cool Just got the G1..have some questions regarding cupcake

Hey everyone! I always wanted to get the G1; I got it yesterday. I'm pretty computer savvy and have used linux so I'm pretty familiar with the terms root, sudo etc. My questions were...yesterday when I went to system update on my G1 it said I was up to date but I wasn't, I wasn't on 1.5 (Cupcake) so I was looking for cupcake online...the link I found seemed to be dead(a legitimate google link I believe) so I hunted and found one on The Pirate Bay...this one http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4910...5_Image_for_G1

Now then, I am not new to forums so I know illegal links shouldn't be posted, but the link I posted is 100% legal to my knowledge so I see no problem in posting it..forgive me if I'm wrong...I wanted to know, now that I have cupcake, can I hack it? In other words, I want to enable multi touch, I want it so that I can install apps to the SD card, etc...besides that what else can you do when you root it? I am on 1.5 and all help would be appreciated! thanks!

If you were looking to root your phone you should have not upgraded to to the 1.5 firmware cupcake, if you had searched here or done some research, the rooting guides will all tell you, you need to downgrade in order to root.

    here is the link.

"Getting root on your phone involves exploiting a security hole that existed in an early version of Android. The versions with the security holes are known as RC19, RC28, and RC29 (or RC7 or lower for UK phones)"

You will downgrade your phone , achieve root , put on a rooted version of cupcake , then its all your choice of what rom you want on your phone . I recommend cyanogens roms . Also , you will want to install cyanogens recovery . The recovery you could use with any rom , but you definately want to install it . Here is a link with all the different rooted roms out there.....

Thats the awesome thing about the G1 community. Everybody wants to do different things and there have been a lot of people that have already done various things so it becomes a quick how do I do it.

The biggest benifit personally of root is the ability to have apps2sd and upgrading your Rom when ever you choose. The tools to backup your rom on the fly is just insane.

I could never tell anybody to ever stay with a non rooted phone. There is just to much freedom with a rooted phone.

Other than here check this site out. There is tons and I mean tons of info there.
