Hello everyone, I stumbled on these discussions recently and this will be my first post.
I wanted to answer _SoCal_'s question about using the chat apps.(AIM, Yahoo, GTalk)

These do not count as texting. They use you data or internet connection. You can verify this information on the T-Mobile G1 FAQ's.
Anyway I just wanted to clarify and participate.

Great Board!!! I cannot wait for my G1 to get here!

Actually I think only Google Talk uses the internet connection. AIM, and Yahoo count towards texting.
Straight from the T-Mobile G1 FAQ

With the $25 data plan, why don’t the Google Talk IMs count toward the included messages?

AIM® and Yahoo! Messenger use a text messaging protocol to send messages. Google Talk actually uses an XMPP protocol, which is billed as Internet access.

g1 seems to be interesting but playing around with a friends i phone [and me being a sidekick user] im really wondering if g1 can do the same things. for instance,

can you play myspace apps on the g1 like the iphone?
does the phone switch views when turning it?
can you send and receive picture messages and video like the sidekick lx?
how much is the 8gb card?[so upset the g1 only comes with 1gb]
can you upload your own ringtones to the phone?
does it have picture id for contacts and as much info storage as the sidekick lx?
how restricted is the web service?
does the g1 have different email folders you can create with other accounts like the sidekick lx?
can you save pictures from email or picture messaging like the sidekick?
is there a flash for the camera?
can you create your own backgrounds for the phone and remove things[like the clock] from the front "desktop"?

i just read somehwere that the phone does not do video.. think this will be a fix?i dont see how a new phone cant do video when so many standard phones can.

    Yes.

Not by default, but it has the accelerometers built-in for this function.

Picture - Yes, Video - Unknown (no video recorder included, should be 3rd party coming soon).

I bought mine from Newegg.com WITH all the adapters for $28.
can you upload your own ringtones to the phone?
    Yes.

Yes. Sidekicks are limited to either 1000 or 2000 contact entries, and ONLY 40 allow picture caller ID. There is unlimited contact storage on G1.
how restricted is the web service?
It's not restricted at all, as far as we can tell. To put it in simpler terms, more full-web access than the SK family...much more access.
does the g1 have different email folders you can create with other accounts like the sidekick lx?
GMail works differently than regular e-mail...instead of folders, you have 'Labels'. Once you label something with a tag, you can 'Archive' it, meaning it won't show up in your inbox any more, but it will show up if you do a search for it, or select the label that it's under (works a lot like folders).
can you save pictures from email or picture messaging like the sidekick?
Yes, they are saved onto the Micro SD, same as Sidekick.

As far as the Accelerometers goes, Im not sure this phone has them. The screen really only switches when you slide out the keyboard. If your on the web or looking at pictures or anything and the keyboard is closed and your turn it landscape, it still stays vertical untill you slide out the keyboard then it will go landscape mode.

The only thing I can think of why people might think it has accelerometers is due to the Street View function. Which in fact uses the phones camera to sense movement. I could be wrong, lol its happened before

Here is the proof it has an accelerometer @1:58 (you can click the "Viddler" to go to the video, the embedded one doesn't seem to work):
You see the guy first opens the keyboard to rotate it, then he closes it and flips it and it still rotated.

maybe someone can write a program that will make the camera sense when the phone is turned so it can rotate the screen.
if not theres always the possibility to make a shortcut on the today screen to make the screen change from landscape to portrait and vice versa

It is well documented on the hardware specs and in the Android API calls that the device has an accelerometer.

Take a look at the Video Player app when you get your phone. Turning the phone on its side changes the view to landscape rather than portrait.

There is no additional evidence needed, this is 150% rock-solid proof of the presence of an accelerometer. No questions asked.
