Okay..So I am from Toronto on Rogers..Many questions..

So I plan on purchasing a T-Mobile G1 sometime before the end of this month.

I have a few questions, although I have looked around haven't found definite questions, just some ramblings leaving me confused..

1.) Is there an unlocked version of the phone floating around yet?

2.) Where/What is the cheapest method/place to purchase this phone? Direct from T-Mobile? E-Bay?..etc

3.) When I insert my sim-card (after I get an unlocked version) will it run normally?

4.) I was actually planning on running without data, I barely use my email and internet isn't really needed, especially not for an extra $30 monthly.. But if I use Wi-Fi I can't download apps?

5.) Every single app is data dependant?

6.) Is GPS data dependant?

No, but the word is wait a few months (like, maybe three) and t-mo will unlock them for free.

Same price everywhere, except ebay which is much higher

You should be able to dl apps with wifi. Someone will correct me if I am wrong here. But you have to have a data plan to activate the phone anyway. No way around it with tmo's current plans.

One important thing to note is that the G1's 3G frequency band is 1700Mhz/2100Mhz. The only 3G provider in Canada, Rogers, ONLY uses the 850Mhz band for their 3G service.

If you buy this phone, find a way to get it unlocked, and import it into Canada -- if you DO decide to use data you'll be stuck on EDGE speeds of about 23KB/s vs 3G speeds of 600KB/s.

Of course there's still Wifi...

Just for the hell of it, is anyone here Canadian? Does anyone know if the $7 Vision Plan from Rogers will work for Edge on the G1?

EDGE would work great for running a few applications, like sports scores and a weather app which don't need intense speeds right?
