    Default Quick question regarding G1.

Been following the G1 closely since launch. I was finally able to cancel with Sprint to get with T Mobile to finally get a G1.

I just got it today (my mother paid for it, and as such, made me wait til today to use it). I love the phone to death. My girlfriend and I both signed up on a contract together, and we've been loving them. I'm coming from a BlackBerry Pearl 8130 and she's coming from some Sony Ericsson flip phone.

Anyway, one question I have is, I don't like how after my screen times out, I have to either put in my gesture unlock (when it's enabled) or push menu to bring up the screen. I want my screen to time out after 30 seconds, but is there any way to make the phone so it doesn't lock after the screen time out? Cause often times I'll send a text, put the phone down, and then a minute later get a reply. I wish I could just push any button and turn the screen on, bringing me right back to the sms thread to continue the conversation.

    Is this at all possible?

Menu - settings- Sound and Display - screen timeout ..... for your screen setting

Menu- settings- Security and location.... Turn off the "Require pattern"

as far as texting goes, you can download the sms popup from the market and it will wake your phone up when you get a text.

Thanks for your reply. I know how to change both those settings. But, what I'd like to do is have the display turn off after 30 seconds, but then not require any sort of pattern or pushing of the menu button to bring me right back to the screen I was on when the screen timed out. Sounds like SMS popup might do what I need.

Edit: I wrote too soon. I guess turning off "Require pattern" and "use visible pattern" does exactly what I wanted it to.

Many thanks for your replies though guys.

+1 on this feature. I'm not sure if it would require an OS modification or just a third party application.

I would like the screen timeout and the security timeout to be two separate settings. This is similar to the BlackBerry OS. Just because I want my screen to timeout in 30 seconds, doesn't mean I want to put in the security code after 30 seconds.

i.e: 30 second screen timeout and 5 minute security timeout.

If such an application or OS modification doesn't exist, can someone at least identify that the ability to modify these settings exists? I may commission an app to be written!

Yeah, it was pretty cool to unlock the phone by drawing a pattern but then it got annoying so I just turned it off. Lol :|

Hey admin, can you move this to the application request forum? it might get more traffic there.

Hey - I stumbled upon something that might help here, or at least it's worth mentioning. There is a way to keep the phone's screen on all of the time when it's charging. The setting is in Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Stay awake.

While it's not an ideal solution, if you're at home having long SMS conversations with people, you could just shove the charger in, or connect it to your computer / PS3 / Sky / desk stand / etc USB port.
