Default Sidekick vs G1 (Feature questions)

I used search and couldnt find anything to give me insight, Im getting ready to pick up a g1 (although by reading all the complaints im having second thoughts), But nowhere in my area is gonna have one i'll be able to mess around with...

so my question is to someone who jumped from sidekick to a g1, on the features, or who has knowledge on both... im curious about these features and how they compare in detail...such as what you can do or cant do, or difference in set up... More specifically refering to the sidekick slide

    1. Aim, Yahoo, Msn messengers...

    2. Email set up and notifications

    3. Text messaging and Picture messaging

    4. Myspace and myspace notifications

    5. how good is the web browsing?

and last but not least, should i jump into a 2 year contract and drop my sidekick? im really looking for someone thats a mix between a sidekick and a iphone and i think this is it, i just dont wanna get stuck in a contract with a phone im unhappy with...

i bought my sidekick slide, and 5 months later, they give the sidekick lx a ota, and they put out the sidekick 08, and both devices now have bluetooth stereo and video capture, mine gets no update, even though mine came out after the lx, and they consider the 08 bottom of the line, quickly mine turned into bottom of the line, but that however was only a 1 year contract, i dont wanna screw myself again... any input?

Well I had the Sidekick 2, 3 and LX. and messed around with the slide.

    I just left the LX

    1) Sidekick Wins! Aim is better on the sidekick hands down. With the G1 it signs out, and loses connection a lot. you can't set custom away messages either if that means anything to you. The LX you could stay signed in AIM forever with the G1 it varies. However there is a meebo application which alows Im that's better than the G1.. you should check that out.

    2) TIE Emails work just fine on the G1. I like it and i think they work very well. You don't get em instantly though like the sidekick. You may receive them from 10 minutes to 2 hours before you get it. You can't download or save attachments as far as I know like the sidekick. but all emails are pushed to your G1 and you are notified just like the sidekick.

    3) G1 Wins With the G1 you are able to view text messages in threaded IM format. So you always know how to respond. It notifies you when a txt message isn't sent. It also shows in the top bar like the Sidekick. So that's very useful. Overall to me the G1 has had the best txt messaging format than any phone i've had yet.

    4) G1 Wins The myspace on the sidekick sucked sooo bad.. I remember the buttons on the browser wouldn't always work and that would be a pain in the butt. and their stupid Myspace application charged you for downloading it and it had a monthly fee. with the G1 you are able to go on the browser and see myspace in desktop computer format and it looks awesome and isn't slow like the sidekick. We also have a myspace app in our market for free with out any charges. so i think that's a given that the G1 wins.

    5) G1 Wins Web browsing is excellent on the G1. Once you try it then you won't want to go backk. it's incredible. It's a lot smoother compared to the sidekick, good resolution screen and it feels like the real internet. It's not like the dumb little javascript on the sidekick. If you think web browsing is important then choose the g1 because it does this near flawlessly.

Overall i like the G1 better because it offers everything that the sidekick doesn't. the only thing the sidekick wins hands down is the aim. but other than that the G1 wins in everythin from camera, browser, free applications etc.

As for you.. I would do the 2 year contract. I'm pretty sure you get 14 days to play around with it before it's too late. I would do that. that's more than enough time to figure out the phone.

ive never owned any new sidekicks, though i did have the 3. so i'll use the 3 for my comparision and hope that it helps you. aim is way better on a sidekick. i had aol mail with my sidekick and got my messages automatically through out the day. i hated it. i like that the g1 gives you the option to check for new messages or not. texting on the g1 is equal to the g1. my sidekick 3 didnt have MMS so the g1 is a big step up. myspace is ok, they made an app for the g1 but i deleted it because facebook is better, imo. but web browsing is better then i've ever seen, and you could easily access myspace from the browser. i loved my sidekick, and my blackberry pearl, but i dont think either of those phones compare to the g1. i think anyone would really enjoy this phone.

let me tell you this. i bought the iPhone when it first came out (4gb). at the time i had the sidekick 3. when i got it, i liked the style and functionality of the iPhone but what i hated most about was there was no physical kb. because of that i went and bought the sidekick lx even tho i unlocked and jailbroke the iPhone for tmo. i effin loved the lx.
ok so now the g1 came out, which i had been waiting for a long time. i wanted an upgrade to the lx with some iPhone functionality. the g1 was the winner. i love my g1.

to answer some of your concerns, the native aim app on android sucks major balls BUT Meebo is available to download, which is a much better app. the sidekicks had a great aim app, Meebo is not as great but is better than the native one.

Email on the g1 compared to the sidekick, imo, is a lot better and functional. I say this because I use gmail so it worked out perfectly.

Overall I'm satisfied with the 'upgrade' from the sidekick lx to the g1. Even though the g1 has its fair share of problems, I'm pretty content with them just because I know this a totally brand new OS. And because of that, things will be rocky, but like I said I'm cool with that.

Btw, the slide sucks! Not trying to be rude but its the truth. I think if you get the g1 and your main thing is texting and email and internet use, then you'll be happy with it. The aim is still iffy but then again android is really new and apps will just get better with a little time.

    Hope this helps

AndroidUser and mrcrs. I couldn't agree more with what you said. Krak if you're leaving SK slide, you will love with the G1. (I have had sidekicks the past couple years and I had a dash b4 my G1.)

I appreciate the input everyone, Yea..i use aim alot, more so i use yahoo messenger for some important stuff, email i use alot , and im always browsing web pages, but i dont do it as much as i could be to the fact the sidekick browser isnt all that great... Ive always been a hardcore sidekick user but ive gotten to the point i want more functionality in my phone. And when i chose the sidekick slide, i didnt know that they were gonna skip the ota on it, and only give it to the lx, so i kinda got screwed in that deal. And ive been eyeing a iphone, and watching the g1 since about 5-6 months before they annouced it, But i have alot of issues with the iphone, such as no hard keyboard, but i like the virtual keyboard...i just wanna be able to have a real keyboard too. (which i hear there working on a virtual keyboard for the g1). And more so, i dont really like apple too much, and i dont being locked into their system for everything. The iphone looks better to me, but the g1 is what ive been wanting as far as functionality, and the possiblities that android has is a real plus.. But all the bad things ive been reading have me wondering, should i just stick with my slide, go to a iphone, or jump into the g1 and have faith they'll fix whats wrong and make improvements. I dont wanna get stuck in a 2 years, and then tmobile drops a better phone with android... I kinda got screwed like that with the slide. I really dont want to jump into a sidekick 08, At this point im not seeing much of a reason to stick with sidekicks....

Do we really need paragraphs to explain this to the guy ?. The G1 surpasses everything the sidekick has to offer besides Instant Messaging. There you go in a nutshell bro!
