Default signing in my domain google account

I'm using google apps which means that I have my own domain name instead of gmail.com. I've read several posts from people that say that they have it working on their G1. Can someone please give a step by step?

I'm on the very first screen where you set up the phone to use your "google account" and I can't even enter my account name because I'm using an @ symbol.

For those that got it working, please help! How did you set up the phone initially? Did you set up some bogus gmail account and have it pull all your app emails (man that would suck)?

Here is what I'm trying to do:
First screen during setup I choose I have a google account.
Second screen it is asking for the google account name.
    I enter username@mydomain.com
    Error, won't accept @ symbols. Can't continue.

Here are threads from all over the place saying they've set up their phone for Google apps domains.

No one is giving a step by step and I can't see how they could possibly be doing this.

No one has replied or even looked at this but I'll go ahead and post the answer for anyone else that needs this info and does a search.

If you have your own domain name and are using gmail still (google apps) you sign in using the steps I outlined above but do NOT use the enter key or the tab key to shift to the password box. If you do, it attempts to validate you have a proper gmail account name and rejects the @ symbole.

Also, you MUST have clicked on the calendar from your google apps account and set up your calendar. If you haven't it will fail to log in with no explanation why.

Anyway, hope this helps someone else out.
